Appointment Pool
West Coast Language Development Centre (LDC) is seeking to establish a pool of dedicated and motivated Speech and Language Officers (Speech Pathologist) for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2022 school year and up to the end of Term 4, 2022. Placements can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2022 school year.
Suitable applicants will possess extensive knowledge in planning for the speech and language needs of students with DLD, to support class and whole of school language initiatives. Suitable applicants need to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team as well as have highly developed ability to work independently.
The Speech and Language Officer develops and supports the implementation of specialised language programs for students with identified speech and language difficulties/impairments. A key aspect of the role is building the capacity of teachers and other staff members to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to maximise language learning outcomes for students with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Speech and Language Officers will work as part of the early intensive student program, predominantly in a pre-primary classroom.
West Coast LDC is a specialist facility that caters for students with DLD. The centre has an intensive, early intervention student program for children from Kindy to Year 1. The service also has an outreach program that works across mainstream schools. The centre is highly innovative and utilises and drives research into what works best for students. Staff are highly collaborative with many involved in the development of innovative programs.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Ability to provide specialised speech and language services and support to students with speech and language impairments and knowledge of the latest trends and research in speech and language development.
- Ability to monitor and evaluate language impaired students’ progress both individually and in the context of language/literacy programs.
- Ability to plan, implement, monitor and review speech and language programs.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an inter-disciplinary team in an educational and/or community setting.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Hold a Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) qualification and eligibility for membership of Speech Pathology Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
