The School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN:BE) is seeking to establish a pool of effective and committed Student Support Officers for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2021 school year and up to the end of Term 3, 2022. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2021 school year, up to the end of Term 3, 2022.
Student Support Officers will work with and support students within the Engagement Centre context both onsite and out in schools. Student Support Officers are responsible for providing individualised case coordination and support services for students with complex and challenging behaviours to form positive connections, transporting students and engaging with students to support learning activities. Suitable applicants will ideally have the ability to conduct dynamic risk assessment and support students in this context.
The role of the Student Support Officer involves developing supportive links between the student, the family, the college/school and other appropriate agencies in the community and establishes a network of partnerships with other government and non-government agencies. Suitable applicants will ideally have previous experience in a similar position working with children and adolescents, as well as possess strong communication and interpersonal skills combined with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a case management team. Suitable applicants will actively participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to support students, including the provision of information and consultancy advice as required.
The SSEN: BE provides educational support and services with schools for students whom present with extreme, complex and challenging behaviours across a K-12 context. A continuum of consultative support with schools for students is delivered through Engagement Centres and the Midland Learning Academy. The services of the engagement centres and the Academy are coordinated through SSEN: BE which provides the administrative structure that oversees and manages these services as a State-wide model of support for schools, teachers and students. The services complement other teams working in networks, regions and schools, supporting a greater number of students across the state, For schools, teachers and students.
Engagement Centres coordinate the K-12 provision of the following three services:
- Professional learning to improve student engagement and behaviour.
- Consultative support for schools needing additional assistance with planning for those students with very complex needs.
- Intensive support for individual students exhibiting the most extreme, challenging and complex needs.
Suitable applicants will be required to work across our South Hedland and Karratha locations.
These positions will involve the suitable applicant/s visiting some of our sites and schools across the state which may include overnight stays. Applicants are required to hold and maintain a current WA “C” class drivers licence for the tenure of their position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships.
- Effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing prioritises within timelines.
- Good research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide solutions.
- Skills and experience in working with individual or small groups of students experiencing difficulties.
- Knowledge of the youth sector, particularly local organisations and services.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
