Halls Head College Education Support Centre (CESC) is seeking to appoint a hardworking and dedicated Special Needs Education Assistant to join our friendly and supportive team.
As an Education Assistant – Special Needs you will be responsible for assisting in the delivery of planned education programs. This will include managing small groups of students under the direction of the teacher that will help in the development of young minds and support the general health and wellbeing of students. You will work in a collaborative environment to provide support for students in the classroom. Experience in working with students with Autism spectrum disorder, mental health, medical health, and behavioural special needs is highly desirable.
The Education Assistant – Special Needs should be friendly, approachable, flexible, and have a genuine interest in supporting students with educational needs, and pastoral care support. The successful applicant will ideally be caring, proactive, and responsive with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as possess good written and oral communication skills to enable the implementation of individual or small group-based programs.
Our current student cohort comprises of almost two thirds male students and an ideal applicant will be experienced and skilled in providing social and physical support and guidance to adolescent male students with disabilities. The ability to work with small groups of students, assisting them socially and academically, is highly desirable. We also have a small cohort of students who are unable to regulate their behaviour; applicants who are willing and capable of implementing Team Teach strategies, including positive handling where required, are encouraged to apply. Assistants will work alongside teachers to ensure the implementation of the school business plan and priorities using the agreed programs and strategies.
Halls Head CESC is a vibrant, caring, and successful small school for students with disabilities. We share a site with Halls Head College and provide a quality educational experience for all of our students, providing personal learning plans and pathways to ensure that each student will progress purposefully towards their own potential.
We are an Independent Public School who cater for students from Year 7 to Year 10 with an intellectual disability and a need for the educational services that we provide. Our students are drawn from the Mandurah area and as far north as Golden Bay, south to Waroona and east to Pinjarra. We enrol students needing intensive support to achieve their educational and or behavioural goals.
The school is led by a Principal, Deputy, Manager Corporate Services, and Program Coordinator, and is supported by an experienced and highly capable leadership team. Our teachers and support staff have additional education support qualifications or training. There is a school psychologist appointed to the school on a part-time basis. We share a school nurse with Halls Head College and also receive support and services from a range of therapists and other local agencies.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
- Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
- Ability to assist with the general health and well being of students.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check; and
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
