Ballajura Primary School (PS) is seeking an outstanding leader to join our dedicated team.
The successful applicant will be a proactive principal who can continue the school’s innovative and creative approach to fostering academic development and improvements in social and emotional development for students. Ballajura PS is a lead school in the Department of Education’s prestigious WA Centre for Excellence in Explicit Teaching of Literacy. In partnership with Curtin University and the Department of Education the school staff share their expertise in the teaching of literacy and developing resources so that other educators can learn from their exemplary practices.
Ballajura PS currently has approximately 730 students and is operating at near to full capacity. Four new Early Childhood classrooms were opened in 2020 inclusive of staff planning facilities, new playgrounds and refurbished cubby houses. The process of upgrade and renewal to keep the school at the forefront of providing enhanced learning environments is ongoing with painting, reroofing and air-conditioning in all classrooms, adventure playgrounds and an upgrade of the Administration building including new welcome signage as well as landscaping. All classrooms had digital technologies with the installation of LED interactive panels, 200 new iPads, and a new colour photocopier. The school board and P&C are actively involved in supporting the school and have contributed significantly to various projects to progress and enhance the school to the benefit of students.
In implementing the 2019-2021 Business Plan, the school has selected the Australian Council of Educational Research National School Improvement Tool to align priorities, targets and focus areas to self-review and report school performance across eight areas. Staff responsibility extends beyond maximising academic outcomes for students to teaching core values including relationships, engagement and respect. The successful applicant will be able to engage with a diverse school community and connect with the educational programs of the school.
The Principal supports the Department’s objectives for the public education and training of students in Western Australia. The role of the Principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department of Education and the school community.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to address the following selection criteria and demonstrate the five professional practises particular to the role of a Principal. You will also be expected to illustrate your capacity in the three leadership requirements “vision and values, knowledge and understanding, and personal qualities, social and interpersonal skills” as identified and detailed in the Australian Professional Standard for Principals:
- Effective leadership in teaching and learning
- Developing self and others
- Leading improvement, innovation and change
- Leading the management of the school
- Engaging and working with the community

All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.
ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
