Harrisdale Senior High School (SHS) seeks to appoint a Head of Department (HoD) – Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) with the experience, dedication and drive to develop a culture of excellence in teaching and learning in the HASS learning area. Due to enrolment growth and Harrisdale SHS becoming a fully Year 7 to 12 school in 2022, we seek to appoint a second HoD to work in collaboration with our current HoD, HASS.
The successful applicant will be a key member of the school leadership team. Your role will include responsibility for the leadership and management of the HASS learning area across nominated year groups. You will be excited at the unique opportunity to lead development of the learning area and in collaboration with a dedicated team of HASS teachers. As the HoD – HASS you will ideally be an expert classroom practitioner with a passion for HASS and the capacity to build a culture of excellence in teaching that supports the learning needs of all students.
To be successful in this role you will ideally have the experience and professional knowledge to lead staff and curriculum development in the HASS learning area. Successful experience leading the development of Year 11 and Year 12 HASS courses is highly desirable as the school continues to introduce WACE courses. You will share a commitment to Harrisdale SHS’s school wide pedagogy of explicit instruction and its emphases on pastoral care and co-curricular programs, and will actively promote the school’s vision, mission and values in the school and community.
Harrisdale SHS offers a wonderful opportunity for local students to access a high-quality secondary education close to home. Currently, the school has an enrolment of 1,630 students in Years 7 to 11. Harrisdale SHS becomes a Year 7-to-12 school in 2022, with an anticipated enrolment of 2,100 students.
Harrisdale is a rapidly growing suburb located approximately 28 kilometres south of the Perth CBD. The school is located on Laverton Crescent, adjacent to the City of Armadale's new playing fields and sports pavilion and Harrisdale Primary School.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
