Statewide Services is seeking to appoint a dedicated and enthusiastic Principal Consultant Two-way Science Initiative.
Two-way Science is an approach to teaching and learning that connects the Western Australian Curriculum: Science to Aboriginal knowledge’s. Two-way Science supports schools to build relationships with local Aboriginal communities to develop a place-based culturally responsive teaching and learning program for primary and secondary school students. The foundation of a Two-way Science learning program is cultural and ecological knowledge taught by local Aboriginal people to students on country and in the classroom. Two-way Science provides an opportunity for all students to learn about science from the world’s oldest continuing cultures, to strengthen Aboriginal student wellbeing and engagement.
The successful applicant will work as part of a team to plan and coordinate the implementation of the Department’s Two-way Science Initiative effectively. They will identify and analyse issues relating to the implementation, ongoing delivery and review of the initiative and determine appropriate solutions as required. The successful applicant will be required to work alongside Aboriginal Elders, STEM professionals and school staff to co-design face-to-face and online professional learning workshops for schools and communities that connect the Australian Curriculum: Science to Aboriginal knowledge’s. The role requires coaching and mentoring of small teams from schools in the development and delivery of integrated Two-way Science learning programs, therefore, highly developed communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
The successful applicant will bring skills, knowledge and experience in building and maintaining relationships, networks and strategic partnerships with Aboriginal communities, leaders and organisations. In addition, they would may be required to undertake travel throughout the state, including overnight stays in non-metropolitan locations and travelling in small aeroplanes to remote locations. A working knowledge of the Western Australian Curriculum: Science, and/or recent knowledge and experience in the delivery of teaching and learning programs in classrooms and on country is advantageous.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our division for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of the strategic direction of Western Australia’s public education system and contemporary policies, frameworks and issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- High-level project management skills with a proven ability to plan and coordinate and evaluate culturally responsive initiatives in a complex environment.
- Highly developed conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills, including the ability to apply strategic thinking to achieve outcomes.
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to build mutually respectful relationships and partnerships with Aboriginal communities, organisations and stakeholders.
- Highly developed written communication skills, including extensive experience in the preparation of correspondence, reports, Ministerials, briefing notes and policy.
- Highly developed strategic planning skills with a proven ability to coordinate, deliver and evaluate strategic outcomes.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold and maintain a current ‘C’ or ‘C.A.’ class drivers’ licence
- undertake travel throughout the state, including overnight stays in non-metropolitan locations and travelling in small aeroplanes to remote locations as required
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
