North East Metropolitan Language Development Centre (NEMLDC) is seeking to establish a pool of Speech and Language Officers - Specified Calling for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2021 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2022. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2021 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2022.
The NEMLDC is a specialist school for children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). We provide specialist speech, language, and academic intervention for children from Kindergarten to Year 2. Staff members work in a collaborative team that includes teachers, speech pathologists, school psychologists, education assistants, and the administration staff.
The NEMLDC has classes over two campuses, with the main campus on the same site as the West Morley Primary School in Dianella. We also have a campus in Balga on the same site as North Balga Primary School. Each campus is well resourced and staffed with teachers, speech pathologists, and education assistants.
The Speech and Language Officer may also be allocated to provide support in mainstream schools as part of our Speech Pathologists in Schools Pilot program. They will be provided training and a network of collegiate support from other Speech Pathologists working in the same capacity. A negotiated service agreement will inform their direction, and they will work autonomously for and within the mainstream school.
The Speech and Language Officer will be required to work across both sites, and/or within a mainstream school environment.
The Speech and Language Officer will provide specialised speech and language services and support to students with speech, language and literacy impairments while assessing, monitoring, and reviewing students’ speech and language/literacy development. The Speech and Language Officer prepares and maintains student speech and language/literacy records and reports while communicating student progress to teachers, family and other stakeholders. They will work collaboratively in inter-disciplinary teams to plan and implement educational programs for language/literacy impaired students whilst providing specialist information and advice to teachers, education assistants, parents, and other professionals in the area of speech, language and literacy impairments.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Ability to provide specialised speech and language services and support to students with speech and language impairments and knowledge of the latest trends and research in speech and language development.
- Ability to monitor and evaluate language impaired students’ progress both individually and in the context of language/literacy programs.
- Ability to plan, implement, monitor and review speech and language programs.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an inter-disciplinary team in an educational and/or community setting.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Hold a Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) qualification and eligibility for membership of Speech Pathology Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
