The School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) is seeking a culturally responsive and aware, passionate, enthusiastic and highly motivated leader committed to achieving the best educational outcomes for our students as a Head of Learning Area (HOLA) Languages.
SIDE is the centre of distance and online learning within the Department of Education. SIDE provides quality education for a large and diverse student population who, for various reasons, cannot attend classes in a regular school or who attend schools unable to offer particular subjects. SIDE currently delivers Kindergarten to Year 12 (K-12) Languages programs in French, Indonesian, Italian and Japanese. The students in our Primary Language program are predominantly in very small regional and remote schools and have a range of diverse cultural backgrounds. To be suitable for this role, you will be culturally responsive, have a qualification to teach one or more of the languages offered at SIDE, and have a thorough understanding of both the Western Australian Curriculum: Languages K-10 and ATAR Language syllabus requirements. Familiarity with Vocational Education and Training (VET) Certificate II in Applied Languages is desirable. The successful candidate will ideally have experience in delivering high quality effective and engaging programs to language students in both primary and secondary contexts.
The Languages department at SIDE comprises approximately 30 teaching staff and is led by two Heads of Learning Area. The successful applicant for this position will work in partnership with the other HOLA Languages. For this role you will ideally be an outstanding educator, possess excellent organisational skills to plan and prioritise within the area of responsibility, have a high level of interpersonal, communication and public relations skills and possess a capacity to lead and manage staff. You will be innovative, knowledgeable and possess thorough understandings of instructional and curriculum leadership and design, with proven ability to foster professional excellence and quality teaching in staff to achieve student outcomes.
SIDE is a recognised leader in distance education in Australia and models best practice in the use of both synchronous (Webex) and asynchronous (Moodle) platforms of instruction. Our practice is both contemporary and constantly evolving, making SIDE an exciting and dynamic place to work. It is highly desirable that the HOLA Languages enthusiastically embraces the pedagogies associated with online learning and demonstrates a high level of information and communication technologies skills.
SIDE has a critical role within the Western Australian education system, supporting system needs and priorities. As a leader at SIDE, you will have the opportunity to make a difference to students throughout Western Australia, leading the delivery of high-quality language programs to suit the varying contexts and needs of our students. All leaders and teaching staff are encouraged to participate in our regional visit travel program which allows them to meet and work face-to face with students in all parts of the state.
