The School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN: BE) is seeking to establish a pool of motivated and dedicated Youth Transition Coordinators for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2021 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2022. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2021 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2022.
Youth Transition Coordinators are responsible for providing individualised case coordination and support services for students aged 10 to 18 years old who are exiting a custodial sentence transitioning from Banksia Hill Detention Centre to a range of education, training and employment options. Youth Transition Coordinators work within the requirements of the Young Offenders Act and the Children and Community Services Act. Youth Transition Coordinators will connect young people to appropriate youth and counselling services, as well as maintain an effective network of youth, employment, education and training services relevant to young people in the area.
Suitable applicants will ideally have previous experience in a similar position working with youth, as well as possess strong communication and interpersonal skills combined with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a case management team. Suitable applicants will actively participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings to support students, including the provision of information and consultancy advice as required.
The SSEN: BE provides educational support and services to schools for students with extreme, complex and challenging behaviours across a K-12 context. A continuum of consultative support to schools for students is delivered through 13 engagement centres and the Midland Learning Academy. The services of the engagement centres and the Academy are coordinated through SSEN: BE which provides the administrative structure that oversees and manages these services as a State-wide model of support for schools, teachers and students. The services complement other teams working in networks, regions and schools, supporting a greater number of students across the state.
Engagement Centres coordinate the Kindergarten to Year 12 provision of the following three services:
- Professional learning to improve student engagement and behaviour
- Consultative support for schools needing additional assistance with planning for those students with very complex needs
- Intensive support for individual students exhibiting the most extreme, challenging and complex needs.
Suitable applicants from this pool may be appointed to engagement centres, or our administrative offices across the Metropolitan Education Region, including
- Dellar Road Engagement Centre – Maddington
- Heathridge Engagement Centre – Heathridge
- Redcliffe Engagement Centre – Balga
- Reid Street Engagement Centre – Bassendean
- Administrative Office – Statewide Services Padbury
- Seville Drive Engagement Centre – Seville Grove
- Shoalwater Engagement Centre – Safety Bay
- Winterfold Engagement Centre – Kardinya
This position will involve the successful applicant visiting schools in the Metropolitan Region to provide support and may also include support to Wheatbelt areas. It may also involve travel across our school Statewide which may include overnight stays. Suitable applicants will need to hold and maintain a current WA drivers licence.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Knowledge and understanding of youth, education and training services, particularly in relation to at risk 10 to 18 year olds.
- Well developed conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify and clarify issues and problems and generate strategies to address them.
- Well developed organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines and work autonomously and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Skills and experience in working with individuals or small groups of students experiencing difficulties.
- Well developed oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, negotiate and resolve conflict.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
