School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) is seeking a passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable leader to undertake a unique and exciting role designed to support English teachers within our small District High Schools, Primary Schools with Secondary Enrolments and Remote Community Schools.
This fixed-term Level 3 Administrator role is part of the Strengthening Regional and Remote Education project. The successful applicant will be attached to SIDE in Leederville and will collaborate with both the leadership team at SIDE and with James Milne, Principal Advisor Regional and Remote Schools, to address the priorities of this project. There is no teaching load within this teacher support and development leadership role.
The schools targeted by this project are characterised by multi-age class groupings throughout the secondary years and/or students from culturally diverse backgrounds, including those who have English as an additional language/dialect. Teaching staff may be new to teaching and/or teaching outside their learning area of expertise. The successful applicant for this leadership role will work in partnership with schools and teachers, providing collegial support and curriculum advice around planning, teaching and assessment in these highly complex educational settings.
The successful applicant will ideally be an outstanding educator with a high level of interpersonal and public relations skills. They will possess a capacity to lead teachers within the English Learning Area by fostering professional excellence and quality teaching to improve student outcomes.
For this role, a thorough understanding of instructional leadership and curriculum design are highly desirable. You will exhibit innovation and creativity in classroom practices, with demonstrated capacity to develop high quality teaching and learning resources and programs that cater for a diverse range of student needs. You will be up-to-date with the latest developments relating to Regional and Remote Education and understand the contextual complexities associated with teaching in these schools.
A key element of the role will be building networks to support secondary English teachers in regional areas to meet the needs of their students and schools in line with the strategic directions of the Department of Education.
SIDE is the centre of distance and online learning within the Department of Education and has a critical system support role within the Western Australian education system. Being attached to SIDE will provide the successful applicant with the technical resources and expertise they will require to remotely assist teachers and schools. This role will also involve a significant amount of travel around Western Australia. A considerable degree of flexibility and the ability to effectively plan and prioritise to balance the requirements of the role will be essential.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
