Eaton Community College (College) is seeking a dedicated teacher to deliver specialist learning programs to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in order to access mainstream education. This program is the only secondary specialised learning program in the South West and is a niche program targeting teaching personal and social capabilities to students with ASD. The expectations are that the successful applicant will adopt evidence-based practices and pedagogies to meet the needs of students with ASD who do not have a comorbidity. Knowledge of, and ability to, apply Western Australian curriculum is highly desirable. As a teacher at this school, the successful applicant, will be team member on staff within an inclusive environment and move between the specific role within the Specialist Learning Program for Students with ASD and mainstream class roles.
In collaboration with the Program Coordinator for this established, popular and well-respected program you will have the opportunity to provide innovative and engaging lessons for our students, contribute to their sense of belonging and overall wellbeing within a very supportive mainstream public secondary school. The successful applicant will develop highly personalised learning plans to facilitate access to age-appropriate curriculum and apply evidence-based individualised education interventions to improve academic engagement, organisational skills, social thinking, peer relationships and self-regulation skills while case managing students to best support their family. Our Program Coordinator and the SLP – ASD team provide mentoring, intensive support and state of the art professional learning for staff so that we can continue to significantly improve all aspects of the learning environment for our students.
It is important that the successful applicant is highly motivated, student and relationship focused and dedicated to improving the outcomes of all students. It is highly desirable to utilise outstanding communication skills and strong leadership within the classroom to create an environment in which high functioning students with ASD can thrive within the highly supportive mainstream secondary school setting. Applicants will be able to demonstrate how their current knowledge of autism and their experience to date demonstrates their capacity to successfully apply these principles in this teaching role.
The College is a medium-sized school catering for approximately 580 students from Year 7 to Year 12 and is an Independent Public School. We offer a wide range of courses from VET, General and ATAR subjects. We are a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) school prioritising whole school collaboration, engaging staff, students and parents in the development and evolution of shared expectations. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate instructional classroom management strategies for effective classroom behaviours, which facilitate learning. This focus on social and emotional development is crucial to the success of the delivery of the curriculum. The teaching expectation is every teacher is delivering explicit teaching strategies and utilising formative assessment and data analysis to provide quality and effective teaching practices that target students’ needs. This year we have embraced Professional Learning Communities focusing on two major areas: Quality Teaching and Social and Emotional Learning. These communities are a significant part of our whole school development and on-going improvements, engaging all staff in the process. We are highly supported by an internal Specialist Literacy Teacher and support personnel, with a current focus on reading, and a proactive PBS team.
In addition, we have an Education Department endorsed Specialised Learning Program for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The program is embedded within the learning environment and we demonstrate inclusive practices. Our educators access our highly skilled specialist personnel, who work with our mainstream educators towards differentiating and prioritising the strengths of individual students and their needs.

The College site is adjacent to the Glen Huon Primary School and close to community facilities such as the Eaton Fair Shopping Centre, Dardanup Shire Offices and a community oval, placing it in the heart of the Eaton community. The site contains significant wetlands of two hectares that form the focal point of the buildings, as well as spacious, landscaped gardens and lawns that provide a beautiful outlook for active, growing students.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

ELIGIBILITY

TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
