Northam Senior High School (SHS), an Independent Public School, is seeking a committed and enthusiastic Head of Department – Physical and Health Education and the Arts - to join their leadership team.
The successful applicant will provide high quality leadership to staff within the Physical Education and Health and the Arts learning areas, and lead the development of challenging and innovative curriculum and practice to achieve strong student outcomes. Staff from both Physical Education and Health as well as the Arts are encouraged to apply.
The successful applicant will be a member of the school’s leadership team and, as such, will provide educational leadership in the school and the community by assisting the Principal and members of the administrative team in promoting the school vision. This is based on excellence in teaching through evidence-based practice, a continuous cycle of improvement, and a positive learning environment.
Northam SHS caters for a diverse range of students. The successful applicant will ideally possess effective teaching, learning, assessment and behaviour management practices and a strong understanding of curriculum. Ideally, you will also have demonstrated excellence as a teacher in a range of courses including those designed to cater for SAER students, through to ATAR courses.
Northam SHS has embarked on the WA Positive Behaviour School program (PBS) so an understanding of this process and how it is implemented and embedded in the day-to-day operations and behaviours in the school would be desirable.
The school has also commenced an Instructional Strategies Framework so a deep understanding of excellent and engaging teaching strategies along with the ability to coach staff to make these part of their practice is also desirable.

The successful applicant will ideally possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to evaluate programs and processes, analyse relevant performance data, and develop strategic plans to achieve optimum outcomes. You will also be expected to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the department by continuing to develop a cohesive, productive atmosphere and a culture where everyone contributes. Professional discussion and debate will be fostered and encouraged in a safe and respectful way. In addition, you will role model exemplary practice to support teachers in all aspects of their work including behaviour management, assessment, parent contact and planning.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
