Peel Language Development School (PLDS) is seeking a qualified and motivated Speech Pathologist to join their team. Applicants with experience in Teaching and possess a good understanding of speech and oral language to work in the role of Support Officer, Speech and Language (SOSL) are encouraged to apply.
PLDS is an Independent Public School which opened in February 2002, and provides a specialist service for students with a diagnosed language impairment, from Kindergarten to Year 3. In 2012, PLDS further enhanced its scope with the incorporation of the Statewide Speech and Language Service (SSLS).
The PLDS, SSLS and SOSL will be based in Port Kennedy and will work as part of a collaborative team of Teachers and Speech Pathologists. PLDS and SSLS provides support to mainstream schools within the South Metropolitan, South West and East Kimberley regions. Our service provides consultations and professional learning to educators in the areas of speech, language and literacy development, predominately Kindergarten to Year Three.
The successful applicant will be supported in their professional development, knowledge of evidence based practices, the Western Australian curriculum and areas of interest that will support the service.
Strong IT skills are preferred, especially Microsoft Office knowledge. As our service continually seeks to improve how we support educators and the wider community in improving their knowledge and practices, we are seeking a proactive participant who embraces change and innovation. A genuine interest of the school community and our PLDS Business Plan is essential.
The team travels regularly within our service region. These trips are planned in advance and team members’ availabilities are taken into consideration as much as possible. A flexible approach to working is required as travel may involve overnight stays. A current Driver’s Licence and registered vehicle are essential.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Knowledge and understanding of issues relating to speech and/or language and learning outcomes.
- Ability to develop, implement, monitor and review the delivery of professional support in language and literacy development.
- Negotiation, consultation and interpersonal skills with proven ability in working collaboratively and maintaining effective working relationships with a range of people across settings.
- Highly developed written and oral communication skills, including effective facilitation skills and the ability to prepare professional tools.
- Well-developed research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify issues, devise plans and apply strategies to address them.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
- undertake travel to regional areas including overnight stays.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
