Newman Senior High School (SHS) is seeking an inspirational, organised, motivated and engaging Deputy Principal to join our Executive Team. Your capacity to enhance and develop a positive working environment, to ensure strategic clarity, supportive leadership and student focus will be essential for this position.
The position is ideally suited for an applicant who is to apply strategic planning to support the school principal to enact the school vision and moral purpose – to educate and inspire students to become productive citizens and lifelong learners. You will be a key member of the school Executive Team, supporting the Principal and School Board to enact the school business plan and vision.
The position will focus on developing successful practices to improve the student learning environment, increase student attendance and engagement, and enhance a positive culture for staff. Strengthening connections and ensuring the school provides a range of learning opportunities for all students is an integral part of the role. While in the first instance this position will focus on Student Wellbeing, case management, SAER, Year 6-7 Transition and Staffing, it should be noted that as a small regional school, the successful applicant will be expected to be flexible and work across the whole Deputy Principal position description. The capacity to work strategically and operationally simultaneously will be well regarded. As well as a key role in school leadership, your capacity to efficiently and strategically manage will be well regarded.
The successful applicant will be knowledgeable and have experience in innovations related to student engagement and wellbeing; capturing key stakeholders and agencies to enhance student experiences, and a focus on students. The flexibility to consider all elements of the deputy principal role, including the outcomes outlined in the JDF, is important, as roles may change over time.
Newman Senior High School opened in 1974. The school caters for approximately 320 students in Years 7 to 12. The Newman Way values of Care and Compassion, Respect and Responsibility are central to our school culture. Our aim is to build a distinctive local school which is the jewel in the Iron Heart of the Pilbara. The school is engaged with the Fogarty EDvance School Improvement Program, and the successful applicant will be a key leader in this journey. The school has a number of partnerships, including with BHP through the Pilbara Education Partnership, Clontarf and Stars Foundations, Follow the Dream; as well as a number of key local agencies and organisations. Your capacity to bring people and agencies together to improve outcomes for students will be essential.
The school’s staff members are key to the success of the school. Many staff members are in their first teaching or leadership position. The school’s Leadership Team focuses on developing capacity in all staff members. The school has high quality buildings and facilities, including a new Quantitative Sciences and Student Services Hub which opened in 2017, and an Engineering/Metals Trade Training Centre. We offer a range of programs from Years 7 – 12, including a comprehensive range of Western Australian Certificate of Education course, VET qualifications in Business and Sports Recreation, Engineering Pathways through the Trade Training Centre, school based traineeships and workplace learning. A key focus for our future is to explore innovative student pathways to increase student engagement.
The school maintains positive relationships with Newman and South Newman Primary School. An exceptional partnership with BHP through the Pilbara Education Partnership provides resourcing and other support to ensure students have access to high quality teaching and learning. A key strength of the school is the positive and strong sense of community. The student group is multi-cultural. Approximately 30% of our students identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, from local areas and around Australia. A focus of this position will be ensuring the school provides engaging, challenging and positive educational experiences from Years 7 – 12, with a high level of parent and community regard.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
