Broome Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to appoint an experienced and innovative educational leader to join their Senior Administration team.
The Education Support community of Broome SHS has recently been granted Department of Education (DoE) - Education Support status (along with feeder Primary School Cable Beach Primary), resulting in additional funding and the creation of this Deputy Principal position. The successful applicant will possess clear knowledge and understanding of the key strategic features required for Education Support programs to be successful within mainstream schools and will be able to draw upon a range of leadership experiences to introduce innovative and progressive structural models for program delivery
The Deputy Principal - Education Support will have primary responsibility for overseeing and managing curriculum development and the delivery of a range of Education Support programs at Broome SHS. Included in the role is management of moderation, assessment, grading and reporting processes within the Education Support community at Broome SHS and line management of the Learning Support Coordinator. As a Level 4 Deputy Principal, this position involves playing an active role in the school’s Senior Leadership team.
The largest department in the school, the Education Support community now comprises a Deputy Principal, Head of Learning Area (HOLA), 4 teachers and approximately 20 Education Assistants. The Deputy Principal and HOLA will work closely together to create and strengthen a collegiate and collaborative team to support the learning and social/emotional needs of students with additional needs at Broome SHS, both funded and unfunded. Students across the full spectrum of disabilities are catered for, from those with profound, complex needs within the specialist Education Support classrooms to those within mainstream classes with mild disabilities or Learning Difficulties. A range of curriculum is currently being delivered, including Western Australian Curriculum, Ability Based Learning Education Western Australia (ABLEWA), Award Scheme Development and Accreditation network (ASDAN), Bushrangers cadets and functional literacy/numeracy programs
Additional duties within the portfolio of the Deputy Principal of Education Support will likely include (in collaboration with the HOLA Education Support):
- Line and Performance Management of staff within the Education Support community
- Formulation and review of the Learning Area plan
- Provision of support with curriculum, assessment, behaviour management, attendance and wellbeing of students within the Education Support community
- Accountability for extracurricular events
- Timetable development and maintenance
- New enrolments of Education Support students including year 7 transition
- Disability resourcing and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) processes
- Senior secondary transition including Vocation Education Training (VET) opportunities and transition to work.
- In conjunction with Senior Admin, work in partnership with local Cluster primary schools on a range of operational matters.
Broome is a vibrant and attractive coastal town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. As a tourist town, Broome is well resourced regarding facilities and services. Applicants offered a position in 2021 will be eligible for Government Regional Officer’s Housing (GROH) housing and assistance with the movement of furniture and vehicle to Broome.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
