We are looking for an experienced Program Coordinator – VET and Careers committed to achieving the best educational outcomes for our students. You will work as part of a dedicated team and have the opportunity to make a lasting contribution to our school community.
Strong leadership skills and knowledge of career education, the upper school curriculum, in particular VET pathways and current industry requirements are desirable. Knowledge of the local community context is desirable. The Program Coordinator will have a willingness to take on significant levels of responsibility and be able to forge links with local businesses, industry and RTO’s including Central Regional TAFE. They will be able to work collaboratively as part of the Merredin College team to achieve the school vision where we aim to be the best we can be in everything we do. In addition, the Program Coordinator will have the skill and experience to support and monitor the performance of teachers in relation to the delivery of VET and careers' programs. They will be able to use their extensive interpersonal skills and knowledge to counsel students and communicate effectively with staff, parents and the wider community.
The short term priorities of the position include collaboration with the Principal and Deputy Principal (Years 7-12) to lead the upper school curriculum program with a particular focus on Vocational Education and Training and Careers. They will assist in setting the direction for VET at Merredin College and will be responsible for developing the strategic plan for VET. Managing the day to day operations and expanding the range of opportunities offered at the Rutherford Trade Training Centre will be an important focus. They will be responsible for managing VET student records and the cost centres associated with VET and Careers in the school. The Program Coordinator will also be responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of programs in providing genuine post-school options for students and in closing the gap for Aboriginal students. The main focus will be to expand opportunities and pathways for senior secondary students, and to improve educational outcomes to increase the number of young people achieving Year 12 Attainment. In addition, he or she will be required to oversee Merredin College’s Transition-to-Work Pathway.
Located 256 kilometres east of Perth in the Central Wheatbelt, Merredin College is a lighthouse rural school providing a high quality educational program for 600 students from K-12. We are unique because our students can remain in the safety of the community in which they were born and at the same school for their entire education. Our staff and our families are true partners in the entire schooling process. From 2017, we become an Independent Public School.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
