Swan View Senior High School (SHS) is seeking an organised and reliable individual to join their administrative team in the role of School Based Attendance Officer.
To be successful in this role you will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with school staff and parents/caregivers to identify student absenteeism and truancy. You will assist school communities with processes that ensure non-attending and alienated students participate and are engaged in educational programs. Good knowledge of school absentee and reporting systems is desirable and a proficiency with excel would be preferred.
The successful applicant will assist the school community with processes that encourage non-attending and alienated students to participate regularly in school programs. This person will collaborate with school staff, parents, regional office and the community to identify and implement interventions to address student absenteeism and truancy. The successful applicant will make regular family contact, including phone calls and home visits and establish community links to monitor and engage identified students and their families. The School Based Attendance Officer will also assist the school to develop and implement individual student attendance improvement plans.
Swan View SHS is located in the foothills of Perth, close to the John Forrest National Park. It was opened in 1977 on an 11.6 hectare site. The school has an ethos that builds a strong learning relationship between staff, students and the community. The school is inclusive with strong links to local Aboriginal community and culture.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- sound knowledge of current trends and issues related to attendance and education within a local community.
- ability to build positive relationships and work effectively with individuals or small groups of students experiencing attendance related difficulties.
- sound research and problem solving skills including the ability to identify appropriate solutions to problems, such as those affecting student attendance.
- sound interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, particularly in a team environment.

Eligibility and training requirements
The provision of Section 50d will be an optional criterion and will be applied to some positions where specific local community needs and issues require an appointee to have an appropriate cultural background. It is not proposed to make this 50d requirement mandatory for all positions.
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to
- commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within
- six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
