Pinjarra Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a dedicated, energetic, enthusiastic, and flexible Student Support Officer to join our friendly Student Services Team.
The successful applicant will collaborate closely with other staff within our existing support structures.
The Student Support Officer undertakes an important role within the Student Services Team. They will assist in developing and introducing systems and intervention strategies which provide a responsive and effective support service for students, family members and staff. Support and advice to teachers will be provided on strategies for engaging and assisting with facilitation of school based intervention programs as part of that role. They provide a pastoral care link between our students, their families, the school and other agencies who provide support to students in a range of settings. This may be mentoring, counselling, assessing levels of risk, providing support and advice, interagency facilitation and taking an active support role in case management.
The successful applicant will desirably possess highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work well as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team. They will have well developed strategies and skills to deal with students who may be highly emotional or escalated. Equally the Student Support Officer will need to communicate well with all agencies and parents. They will undertake research on current issues for young people, participate in projects and provide written reports as required as well as record, collate and prepare information used to develop and monitor strategies and alternative programs.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships.
- Effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing prioritises within timelines.
- Good research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide solutions.
- Skills and experience in working with individual or small groups of students experiencing difficulties.
- Knowledge of the youth sector, particularly local organisations and services.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
