Appointment Pool
Como Secondary College (SC) are seeking to establish a pool for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2021 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2021 school year.
Teachers in this role deliver a specialist learning program to support students in Years 7 to Year 9, who are at risk in literacy and numeracy.
Suitable applicants will work in a small team which is strongly supported by the school’s administration team. They will have the opportunity to develop high level teaching skills in a supportive environment in order to significantly improve the future of students at educational risk. Entry into mainstream classes is the ultimate aim for these students.
This program is gaining a well-deserved reputation for achieving outstanding improvement in students struggling with literacy and numeracy. The focus of the program is to get the students to experience success and achieve much higher rates of progress than they have previously achieved, to the extent that they are conscious of their own improvement.
Ideally suitable applicants for this position will have:
- Ability to establish and maintain strong, supportive relationships with the students and their families.
- Patience and resilience
- Ability to work in a team and collaborate with other staff.
- Experience in delivering Direct Instruction programs such as Corrective Reading and Spelling Mastery.
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles and theory underlying Direct Instruction.
- Experience in explicit instruction and an understanding of the principles of effective instruction.
- Qualifications in special education and/or teaching students at educational risk.
- Excellent data analysis skills to support the monitoring of student progress.
- Experience in, and a thorough understanding of, diagnostic testing.
- Experience in, and a thorough understanding of, standardised testing, particularly the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT).
- Excellent behaviour management skills.
Experience and study in these areas, while an advantage, is not vital – however a desire and ability to develop expertise in these areas is essential. Comprehensive professional development and on-the-job training will be provided. Switch teachers and graduates are encouraged to apply.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.

TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement; and
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
