Derby District High School (DHS) are seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Deputy Principal – Early Childhood Education to join our school. Derby DHS promotes the "Stronger Smarter Philosophy" of high teacher, student and school expectations. School leaders are expected to lead this approach in all aspects of the school as well as providing support to the Early Years staff and promoting positive high expectations relationships with students, staff, parents and the wider community of Derby and surrounding Aboriginal communities.
As a Deputy Principal, you will be expected to share your knowledge and experience in presenting professional learning within the school and possessing a high level of knowledge in Early Childhood Education contemporary practices will be highly regarded. As a Deputy Principal at Derby DHS, you should have a clear understanding of National Quality Standards and of On Entry Assessment and data driven planning as well as an understanding of KindiLink systems. The successful candidate should also have a strong knowledge of Let’s Decode, Explicit Direct Instruction and a commitment to continual improvement through evidence based practice.
To be successful in this role you will have excellent communication and organisational skills, as well as the ability to work effectively as part of a team. You will also need to develop positive relationships with students, staff, and parents and engage parents and the wider community in the educational work of the school to enable all students to reach their potential. Candidates need to be able to develop mutual respect and provide support for colleagues.
The successful applicant should desirably be experienced in the management of student behaviour and be committed to collaborative teaching and learning practices to increase student engagement. You will also need to be an exceptional practitioner, ideally with a proven ability to bring about successful outcomes in all dealings, especially with students who may experience challenges external to the school setting. In addition, experience working in an Aboriginal community and a passion for Aboriginal Education and improving the educational outcomes for these students is highly regarded.
Other desirable applicant qualities would include a positive attitude and the ability to anticipate and adapt to change and demonstrate initiative, as well as support a strong culture of collegiality, integrity and high expectations.

Creativity, critical analysis problem solving teamwork, and communication combined with links to external agencies supporting contemporary education will be beneficial to the role.

The school is currently part of the Kimberley School’s Project and seeks staff to enact a targeted teaching approach as part of their overall teaching and learning programs. This role will require you to mentor and support staff in the implementation of this initiative with a strong focus on Let’s Decode and Explicit Direct Instruction.
Derby DHS is situated in Derby at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australian. Located in attractive and well maintained grounds and surroundings, Derby DHS is 220km east of Broome by road and is 2463km north of Perth with an enrolment of just over 600 students it provides an education program from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Derby was the first town settled in the Kimberley and students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park. It is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings.
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes.
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students, (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
Training
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
