Derby District High School (DHS) is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Deputy Principal to join our school. The successful applicant will ensure coordination of Student Services as well as develop and ensure high-level, inter-agency support and case management for students in years K - 6. Outstanding interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with school staff, parents/caregivers and students as well as with personnel from external organisations will be an important aspect of this role. The ability to anticipate, adapt to change and be able to cope with unpredictable and challenging situations will also be an advantage.
To be successful in this role you should possess excellent communication skills and easily form positive relationships. Superb organisational skills will be highly advantageous in this role, allowing you to manipulate and interrogate school databases from a range of sources and produce quality reports as you prioritise, plan and devise strategies for improvement across the primary school. In addition, experience working in an Aboriginal community and a passion for Aboriginal Education with a view to improving the educational outcomes for these students is highly regarded.
Other desirable qualities would include demonstrated experience in implementing Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) systems in a leadership role in a primary school context. In addition, being highly skilled in planning, organising, implementing, and supporting engaging classroom programs is also greatly desirable for this role. As the successful applicant you should also have experience in the management of student behaviour and be committed to collaborative teaching and learning practices to increase student engagement particularly in a primary context. You will also need to be an exceptional practitioner, ideally with a proven ability to bring about successful outcomes in all dealings, especially with students who may experience challenges external to the school setting and be able to engage with Shooting Stars and Clontarf academies. It is desirable that you have experience in case management of students and managing documented plans to meet the needs of our students.
This position offers an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to contribute to and enhance our community engagement. The successful applicant would sit on the community Youth at Risk committee. Creativity, critical analysis, problem solving, teamwork and communication combined with links to external agencies supporting contemporary education will be beneficial to the role.
Derby DHS is a dynamic school with a highly motivated staff who are passionate about improving standards in Education; particularly in Aboriginal Education. With an enrolment of just over 600 students it provides an education program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Derby DHS caters for the academic, social and emotional development of students with diverse educational needs as students attend from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park.
Derby DHS is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australian, 220km east of Broome and 2463km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley and is well supported with a range of government infrastructures Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings.
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes.
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students, (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
Training
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
