Derby District High School (DHS) are seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Deputy Principal to join our school. We are seeking a Deputy Principal who will be responsible for student’s pathway development and pastoral care of students in years 10 -12. Other aspects of this role include but are not limited to, tracking and management of Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) curriculum Delivery, coordination of Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) Workplace coordination.
Derby DHS promotes the "Stronger Smarter Philosophy" of high teacher, student and school expectations. School leaders are expected to lead this approach in all aspects of the school. The successful applicant will support the Senior School staff, as well as promoting positive high expectations relationships with students, staff, parents and wider community of Derby and surrounding Aboriginal communities.
To be successful in this role you will have excellent communication and organisational skills, as well as the ability to work effectively as part of a team. You will develop positive relationships with students, staff, and parents and engage parents and the wider community in the educational work of the school to enable all students to reach their potential. As the Deputy Principal, you will be able to develop mutual respect and provide support for colleagues and ideally have an excellent understanding of attainment and WACE requirements. This role also requires the successful applicant to design and track and report on individuals and groups of students and ideally have coaching and or mentoring experience in senior school processes.
In addition to this you will be a team player and have the ability to build effective teams. An understanding of contemporary student pathways planning, student and cohort monitoring and intervention along with flexible planning will be an advantage. The ability to deliver high quality teaching and mentoring graduate students in developing teaching and learning strategies is desirable. In addition, experience working in an Aboriginal community and a passion for Aboriginal Education and improving the educational outcomes for these students is highly regarded.
As the successful applicant you will desirably be experienced in the management of student behaviour and be committed to collaborative teaching and learning practices to increase student engagement. You will also need to be an exceptional practitioner, ideally with a proven ability to bring about successful outcomes in all dealings, especially with students who may experience challenges external to the school setting.
Derby DHS is a dynamic school with a highly motivated staff. The collaborative approach, exciting work environment and the students make it a great place to teach. Staff are passionate about improving standards in Education; particularly in Aboriginal Education. The school is currently part of the Kimberley School’s Project and seeks staff to enact a targeted teaching approach as part of their overall teaching and learning programs. This role will require you to mentor and support staff in the implementation of this initiative with a strong focus on Explicit Direct Instruction.
Derby DHS is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australian. Derby is 220km east of Broome by road and is 2463km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!
Derby DHS is located in attractive and well maintained grounds and surroundings. With an enrolment of just over 600 students it provides an education program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park. Students in Years 11 and 12 have access to a range of programs leading to secondary graduation.
Vocational and Education Training (VET) programs are offered in the school and in partnership with the local TAFE campus. Subjects leading to university entrance are either delivered by school staff or through the School of Isolated and Distance Education.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
Training
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
