Appointment Pool
Shenton College Deaf Education Centre (DEC) is seeking to establish a pool of Teachers of the Deaf for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2021 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2021 school year.
As a Teacher of the Deaf you will be responsible for delivering learning programs tailored to meet the educational needs and preferences of individual students and include academic and vocational pathways. Literacy, numeracy and communicative competency are priorities at Shenton College DEC, and the development of the student as a whole person empowered to take their place in society. Teachers of the Deaf will guide students by designing a learning environment that is supportive, stimulating and fosters independence. An aspect of this position would be to deliver Auslan as a LOTE (Language Other Than English).
Suitable applicants will ideally possess flexibility, teamwork and a collaborative approach as they will be required to work in a specialised support team as well as with Shenton College staff. It is highly desirable for suitable applicant to possesses strong information communication technology (ICT) skills, as ICT is integral to all learning programs at Shenton College DEC.
It is highly desirable for suitable applicants to have previous experience in a secondary school environment using fluent AUSLAN, combined with experience in linguistics in both English and AUSLAN. It is also highly desirable for suitable applicants to have an understanding of the use of cochlear implant and other audiological equipment. Knowledge and a positive approach in approaching the challenges of teenage mental health issues is also highly desirable.

Shenton College DEC is a secondary school co-located on site with Shenton College. This is a unique situation where Shenton College DEC is a separate school but operates without geographical boundaries within Shenton College. Shenton College DEC has formed a working relationship with Shenton College to develop an inclusive program to best meet the needs of each student. We are pleased to share a co-located learning environment with one of the top public schools in the state.

Access to the curriculum is provided via AUSLAN and English with an additional vital focus on supporting the use of audiological equipment where appropriate and necessary. The input of family and community is highly valued at Shenton College DEC and direct contact with families is appreciated and respected, taking place at least weekly. Families who are from different cultural backgrounds (e.g. Deaf or Aboriginal) have their circumstances taken into account when communicating with them.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate your competency against the following domains (that govern the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers):
- Professional knowledge;
- Professional practice; and
- Professional engagement.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:

TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement; and
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
