Albany Secondary Education Support Centre (ESC) is looking for a professional and collaborative leader, to lead a centre committed to providing a safe, caring and supportive environment where children are empowered to achieve their social, emotional and academic potential. Vertical classes prioritise the social and academic needs of individual students.
The successful applicant will quickly build and maintain effective working relationships with all staff. They will use their strong interpersonal skills to ensure staff are an integral part of decision making. The shared leadership roles and responsibilities provide opportunities for the successful applicant to work alongside staff to nurture their skills and empower them to build their capacity.
The wellbeing of all staff and students is a priority and it will be important for the successful applicant to ensure the safe, collaborative and supportive learning environment is maintained. A knowledge of supporting staff and students in managing complex behaviour needs is essential. The Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach is embedded across the centre.
They will be an effective communicator who understands the importance of leading a multi- disciplinary workforce whilst meeting the needs of a diverse student population in an inclusive manner. They will also build on the productive partnerships with parents, the local community and other organisations and draw on resources and expertise to provide students with the very best opportunities.
Albany Secondary ESC is recognised as a leader in delivering ASDAN (Awards Scheme Development Accreditation Network) units. As an ASDAN Teacher Development School, they offer a broad range of ASDAN courses to students in addition to providing professional learning and support to other schools looking to implement ASDAN. The successful applicant will continue and add value to this, and other distinctive programs including Bush Rangers, HALO (Helping Autism through Learning and Outreach), Community Work and Work Based Learning.
This opportunity has arisen as the substantive Principal is on leave. The successful applicant will be highly discerning, maintaining or adding value to the centre’s excellent standards, processes and learning opportunities, and initiating and leading responses to specific challenges or problems with careful consideration to effective change management processes.
As an Independent Public School, the successful applicant will ensure a productive and collaborative relationship with the board, ensuring decision making and strategic planning processes are guided by evidence and focused on improved student outcomes. 2021 will be the first implementation year of the new business plan.
Albany Secondary ESC will enrol approximately 65 students in 2021. They share a campus and a strong and productive relationship with the students and staff at North Albany Senior High School (SHS). The successful applicant will work with the leadership team at North Albany SHS to continue to extend the inclusion program.
The Principal supports the Department’s objectives for the public education and training of students in Western Australia. The role of the Principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department of Education and the school community.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the three leadership requirements and five professional practices particular to the role of a principal identified by the Australian Professional Standard for Principals:

- Engaging and working with the community

All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.
ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
