Appointment Pool
The Curriculum, Assessment and Strategic Policy Division is seeking to recruit highly motivated and committed Principal Consultants in the Examination Development branch for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during 2020 and up to the end of August 2021. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements up to 31 August 2021.
Suitable applicants will provide advice on the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) and Externally Set Tasks (EST) policies and practices, along with assisting in the strategic planning and formulation of processes for the development of ATAR course examination materials and EST materials. As Principal Consultants, you will manage appointments and briefings of examiners, independent reviewers and external checkers for designated ATAR courses and briefings of writers and checkers for designated EST courses.
Suitable applicants will also plan, manage and monitor the development and evaluation of designated ATAR course examination materials, as required by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority), and check the analyses of these examinations to ensure reliability and validity. You will also plan, manage and monitor the development and evaluation of designated ESTs, as required by the Authority. In this role, you will be expected to provide advice to the School Curriculum and Standards Division Executive, committees and working parties on the development of ATAR course examination materials and ESTs and assist with the post-examination statistical process carried out by the Information Systems Branch.
Principal Consultants liaise with schools and other external stakeholders to provide information on Authority policies and procedures pertaining to the ATAR course examinations and ESTs. You will be required to develop reports, maintain effective records and course information databases in accordance with the Department of Education’s record keeping policy and in relation to examination development.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our branch for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Substantial knowledge of curriculum and assessment in the context of the WACE, ATAR course examinations and the ESTs.
- Highly developed organisational skills with a proven ability to deliver outcomes on schedule in a demanding environment and under tight timeframes.
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including experience in undertaking high-level consultation, collaborations and negotiations.
- Highly developed written communication skills with the ability to edit and ensure documents are error-free.
- Ability to provide leadership and work collaboratively to manage a range of complex projects.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
