Kalumburu Remote Community School (RCS) is seeking a dedicated, hard-working individual to fill the role of Program Coordinator.
The Program Coordinator develops High School programs to open WACE pathways for Kalumburu students. They will engage with the School of Isolated and Distance Education to design a new approach for providing learning, including VET and ASDAN programs. Kalumburu RCS is a Kimberley Schools Project school and the Program Coordinator will guide and support teachers with developing Targeted Teaching skills and implementing Daily Reviews.
The role is not limited to curriculum and also provides Student Services and behaviour support for Secondary students. The Program Coordinator will work closely with support services such as the School Psychologist and SSEN:BE to support student learning and behavioural needs. Knowledge of Positive Behaviour Supports (PBS) would be advantageous.
To be successful in this role you will demonstrate a passion to improve outcomes for Aboriginal students, be flexible, resilient and a positive team player. Experience working with Aboriginal learners and engaging families would be an advantage and sound cultural awareness is a must. The job description of the Program Coordinator may vary in the future to meet the business and operational needs of the school.
Kalumburu, meaning 'Path by the River’ or ‘River Crossing', is the most northerly Aboriginal Community in Western Australia and is situated on Kwini Country on the banks of the King Edward River. The nearest townships to Kalumburu are Kununurra (565km SE), Wyndham (560km SE) and Derby (650km W). Road access to the region is dependent on seasonal conditions and is Kalumburu is often inaccessible by road for 4-6 months of the year. Alternative access is by air from Kununurra, and supplies are regularly delivered by sea.
The Community of Kalumburu currently numbers around 500 people and is serviced by the school, community clinic, community store including takeaway, and an administration office providing postal, banking and Centrelink services. Kalumburu RCS has a high percentage of Aboriginal students and the school priorities are literacy, numeracy, health, well-being, attendance and engagement. The school is also focussing on building community participation and involvement in the school.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage physical and financial resources.

Eligibility
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
Training
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
