The School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN: BE) is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Student Support Officer to join their team in Kimberley Engagement Centre, located in Broome and servicing the Kimberley Education Region.
Student Support Officers will work with and support students within the Engagement Centre context both on-site and out in schools. This work will encompass a range of roles and tasks including individualised case coordination to support students in this setting, such as transporting students, forming positive connections, engaging with students to support learning activities, and liaison with inter-intra agency support. Students in the engagement centre sphere are by nature of this work disengaged from mainstream education for a range of reasons and may present with elevated behaviour support needs.
The successful applicant will ideally be a dedicated professional with a passion for working with youth to assist them to make a significant difference in their lives. Applicants should be able to work collaboratively with other team members to provide an environment that nurtures the emotional, physical and academic well-being of all students, support increasing engagement, monitor academic progress and encourage positive behaviours.
The successful applicant will ideally have the ability to conduct dynamic risk assessment and support students in this context, including an ability to analyse data to inform both progress and change. The successful applicant will need to have highly developed interpersonal skills and work well as part of a team. You will be required to maintain comprehensive records and adopt a collaborative and consultative approach at all times.
The SSEN: BE provides educational support and services to schools for students with extreme, complex and challenging behaviours across a K-12 context. A continuum of consultative support with schools for students is delivered through 13 engagement centres and the Midland Learning Academy. The services of the engagement centres and the Academy are coordinated through SSEN: BE which provides the administrative structure that oversees and manages these services as a State-wide model of support for schools, teachers and students. The services complement other teams working in networks, regions and schools, supporting a greater number of students across the state.
Engagement Centres coordinate a continuum of support across K-12 including:
- Professional learning to improve student engagement and behaviour
- Consultative support for schools needing additional assistance with planning for those students with very complex needs
- Intensive support for individual students exhibiting the most extreme, challenging and complex needs.
The successful applicant will be physically located on site at the Kimberley Engagement Centre in Broome. This position will involve the successful applicant visiting schools in the Kimberley region to provide support. It may also involve travel across our school, including travel to Perth to attend associated training and school development days at our main school site operating out of Statewide Services Centre in Padbury, which may involve overnight stays. Applicants also need to hold and maintain a current WA drivers licence.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships.
- Effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing prioritises within timelines.
- Good research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide solutions.
- Skills and experience in working with individual or small groups of students experiencing difficulties.
- Knowledge of the youth sector, particularly local organisations and services.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
