We currently have the following positions available:

(2) x Seven (7) months fixed term full-time 

(1) x Six (7) months fixed term, part-time (0.8FTE)

(1) x Six (7) months fixed term, part-time (0.6FTE)

(1) x Six (7) months fixed term, part-time (0.4FTE)

All positions will commence Term 3, 2020.

As an Education Assistant - Special Needs are will be responsible for assisting teachers with preparing resources and programs that meet the learning needs of students with disabilities and to encourage these students to reach their individual goals. You would also provide effective feedback when required on education and therapy programs and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of student’s individual goals. In this role you are also required to have an ability to assist with the general health and wellbeing of students.

Suitable applicants will work with limited supervision or autonomously and will meet the requirements of a level 3 Education Assistant. Applicants will ideally have skills in working with students using: Positive Behaviour Support strategies, Applied Behaviour Analysis, and Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN). Applicants will be supporting students in the workplace, in the community on leisure and recreation programs and in the classroom. A demonstrated skill in the use of information technology (IT) is highly desirable.

Kenwick School is a government Level 4 Education Support School serving approximately 90 students. The school serves a large catchment area from Byford to Kenwick and from Roleystone to Thornlie.

The school purpose is to ensure that all Kenwick School students develop the knowledge, confidence and skills to achieve their potential and contribute to society. Students are aged from 4 to 18 years, from Kindergarten to Year 12, and have a diverse range of support needs and abilities. Students have mild/moderate to profound intellectual disabilities. Some students have severe and multiple disabilities, challenging behaviours, while others have vision and hearing impairments.

The school has two ovals, two fenced playgrounds for different age groups and several toilets designed to meet the needs of students, including those with multiple physical handicaps. The school also has a basketball/volleyball court, a fenced garden for student gardening projects and an indoor heated swimming pool. Other school facilities include a teacher resource library, a physiotherapy treatment room/mini gym for use by students, a fully equipped kitchen for student cooking sessions, a laundry for home care skills, an indoor/outdoor recreation room which is used for motor programs and school assemblies, a Multi-Sensory Environment Room for sensory activities and a nurses' office and treatment area.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for fixed term or permanent appointments to other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
  • Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students

ELIGIBILITY

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten Students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

TRAINING

Employees will be required to:

  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
