Derby District High School (DHS) is seeking an experienced administrator who will work closely with the Principal and members of the administration team to provide educational leadership in the school community by helping develop and promote the school values and priorities, and encouraging staff, volunteers from the community and others to share ownership of the school’s vision and goals.
As the successful applicant, you will be responsible for students’ pathway development in years 10 – 12; the pastoral care of students in years 10 – 12; tracking and management of the Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR), the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) curriculum. You will also lead the delivery and coordination of the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA); the workplace coordination and career management of Year 12 graduating students.
To be successful in this role you will be highly competent at establishing positive relationships across a wide range of contexts and will have an excellent understanding of attainment and WACE requirements. You will also have the ability to design and track and report on individuals and groups of students and ideally have coaching and or mentoring experience in senior school processes. In addition to this you will be a team player and have the ability to build effective teams. An understanding of contemporary student pathways planning, student and cohort monitoring and intervention along with flexible planning will be an advantage.
The ability to deliver high quality teaching and mentoring graduate students in developing teaching and learning strategies would be highly desirable. Ideally, the successful applicant will have experience working in an Aboriginal community and a passion for Aboriginal Education and improving the educational outcomes for these students. Experience in the management of student behaviour and a commitment to collaborative teaching and learning practices to increase student engagement are also highly desirable qualities. You will also be an exceptional practitioner, with the ability to bring about successful outcomes in all dealings, especially with students who may experience challenges external to the school setting.
Derby DHS is a dynamic school with a highly motivated staff. We boast a collaborative approach and exciting work environment where staff are passionate about improving standards in education, particularly in Aboriginal Education. Derby DHS is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australian. Derby is 220km east of Broome by road and is 2463km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming! Derby DHS is located in attractive and well maintained grounds and surroundings. With an enrolment of just over 650 students it provides an education program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus. Students in Years 11 and 12 have access to a range of programs leading to secondary graduation. Vocational and Education Training (VET) programs are offered in the school and in partnership with the local TAFE campus. Subjects leading to university entrance are either delivered by school staff or through the School of Isolated and Distance Education.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
