Lynwood Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated and experienced school leader committed to achieving outstanding educational outcomes for all students in our culturally diverse school.
The Head of Department - Mathematics, will possess exceptional interpersonal attributes, leadership skills and curriculum knowledge ensuring that the teaching staff are supported in their development as a confident, cohesive and high performing team in the context of strategic school initiatives.
Developing strong and productive working relationships with school leaders, teachers, students and school community members will be key in strengthening school performance, and developing and sustaining a culture of trust and collaboration.
The school is implementing a number of teaching and learning initiatives informed by Lynwood’s involvement in the Fogarty EdVance Program and is continuing to roll-out Explicit Instruction across the school. Actively supporting this commitment to Explicit Instruction will be central to the position, while leading the implementation of this pedagogy in the Mathematics learning area and completing the development of a fine grain scope and sequence. Ideally you will bring to the position demonstrated experience in delivering EI, working in partnership with other school leaders to develop staff capacity and participating in the future development of the school’s Instructional Framework. Demonstrated capacity in implementing instructional coaching, as part of a school-wide strategy, is highly desirable.
With a love of learning and a growth mind-set evident in your interaction with staff, students, parents and school community members the Head of Department - Mathematics, will have a key role in supporting the Staff and Student Wellbeing school priorities. Ideally you will be an expert classroom practitioner with capacity to build a culture of excellence in teaching and learning. You will guide and support your team to successfully implement evidence-based strategies which continue to build a positive school culture, promote outstanding engagement of students and challenge personal academic achievement in a safe and supportive learning environment.
This position requires someone with a deep knowledge of curriculum planning, assessment and reporting who can continue to work collaboratively, in and across teams. Demonstrated capacity to develop and implement a whole school numeracy plan and workable initiatives to improve numeracy across the whole school environment is essential. The ability to effectively use data to inform decision making should underpin your practice.
Lynwood SHS became an Independent Public School in 2012 and won the WA Education Awards Secondary School of the Year in 2018 after being a finalist in 2015. After three years participating in the Fogarty EdVance Program, we are continuing as an Alumni school from 2020. This program has strongly informed our professional learning, reflection and planning processes and a deep focus on evidence based, high impact teaching and learning strategies.
With an Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) of 977 (Band 6), we have around 55% Language Backgrounds Other Than English and over 60 different nationalities represented at the school. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
