About the role
This is an excellent opportunity for you to join a specialist emergency response team based in Canning Vale. The Special Operations Group (SOG) is a major service provider within Department of Justice, delivering emergency response and security support to correctional facilities within WA. We are looking for men and women with a commitment to excellence who enjoy a fit and active lifestyle.
You will join a committed, dedicated and disciplined team undertaking the following roles:
- Master control room operations
- Perimeter security
- Responding to major incidents
- Searching
- High security and specialist escorts
- Operational and emergency response management training

SOG Officers play a vital role in the work of the Department, exemplifying behaviours which demonstrate respect, integrity, good judgement, self-discipline and initiative.
SOG Officers work effectively as team members, responding to directions and instructions, while building positive working relationships. Being able to operate within a structured environment with limited supervision, they are able to demonstrate reasoning and analytical skills to resolve problems, make decisions, and ensuring they carry out tasks to completion.
Working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, SOG Officers have an ability to recognise, respect and learn how to work with gender, social and cultural differences, including with Aboriginal people.
Adept with both oral and written communication, SOG Officers utilise these skills to resolve conflict in a diverse range of contexts and situations.
As a SOG Officers your health and fitness is of a high priority. It’s important to maintain this by ongoing health and fitness strategies to keep up with the role and understand that sound body and mind are critical to providing an effective and safe emergency response service.
About you
To be eligible for employment as a SOG Officer with the Department of Justice, you must:
- Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or have permanent residency status within Australia
- Possess a valid C-Class (Manual) driver’s licence
- Possess a valid and unrestricted Medium Rigid (MR) class heavy vehicle licence or equivalent (or be willing to obtain this within 12 months of employment at your own expense)
- At time of appointment, possess a HLTAID003 Provide First Aid qualification (with nine months validity remaining).
- Obtain clearance through the Department’s criminal history and integrity screening assessment process.
If appointed, new officers must successfully complete all mandatory foundation training and assessment requirements upon engagement with the Department. In addition, SOG Officers are required to undertake ongoing learning and development activities to maintain a satisfactory level of skills, knowledge and fitness as required of the position.
Selection Assessments
Shortlisted applicants will need to be available to attend various selection assessments (e.g., fitness testing, interviews, medicals) in Perth during the period of April 2020 to June 2020. You will be provided with the dates and locations of assessments prior to each stage should your application progress. Any travel to and from assessments is at the applicant’s expense.

Pool Recruitment
The Department of Justice uses recruitment pools to build a bank of talent for future opportunities. When part of a pool you may be offered a permanent or temporary position, however an appointment is not guaranteed.
This pool will be open for a period of twenty four months from the date of first appointment. Permanent and fixed-term full-time appointments may be offered as vacancies arise. A successful application and placement in the SOG appointment pool does not guarantee an offer of employment.
