Cassia Education Support Centre (ESC) is seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2020 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2020 school year.
The role of the Education Assistant – Special Needs is to assist the teacher in the delivery of planned education and behaviour management programs including TEACHH and Applied Behaviour Analysis. Suitable applicants will be required to assist students with hygiene including: showering, toileting, dressing and where necessary, cleans soiled clothing and areas.
You will be required to assist with the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment by maintaining equipment, materials and resources for use in class and assist the teacher with the care and supervision of students in out of class activities and on school excursions. Designs and implements behaviour management plans in consultation with teachers, parents and Psychologist. Assisting in the implementation of specialised education intervention programs such as occupational therapy, speech therapy and physiotherapy as instructed.
Although these skills are not required, they would be considered desirable: Knowledge and understanding of disabilities including, but not limited to; Autism, Down Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy. Certificate III in Education Support, Children’s Services or similar. Knowledge of communication systems including Key Word Signing and Auslan and in addition, knowledge of teaching strategies including Applied Behaviour Analysis, TEACHH, Diana Rigg and John Fleming would also be desirable.
Cassia ESC is a government school for children who have been identified as having an intellectual disability. We share a campus with Cassia Primary School. The school lies within the Pilbara Education Region. Our student population ranges in age from Kindergarten to Year 6. The Centre attracts the services of a School Psychologist and the Allied Health services of a School Nurse and related therapy staff that provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy programs. The purpose of Cassia ESC is to promote the abilities of each student and develop their confidence, knowledge, skills and leadership qualities to equip them with competencies for a world beyond school.
At the Centre, the Teachers write Individual Education Plans for each student and teaching and learning is tailored to that student’s learning needs. These plans are a working document and are continuously updated. Goals are set to address the domains of: reading, writing, mathematics, social and emotional skills, physical needs, health, and/or communication skills depending on the needs of the student. Each student is encouraged to work at his or her own pace. Multi-aged groups and cross-settings are key features at the Centre. In addition, we are conscious of the fact that not all children come to school with the same foundations for learning. We are committed to learning programs that are culturally appropriate, inclusive and supportive.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
- Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
- Ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check; and
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
