The School of Special Educational Needs: Sensory (SSEN: S) are seeking to establish a pool of dedicated and enthusiastic Associate Principal’s for appointments to fixed term, full-time vacancies which may arise due to staff leave during the 2020 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2020 school year.
The School provides educational support for children with hearing loss and/or vision impairment from birth to completion of school. SSEN: S is based at the Statewide Services Centre in Padbury and supports children in both public and non-government schools throughout Western Australia.
The role may involve extensive state-wide travel with overnight stays including long distance driving, some of which may be in remote locations.
The Early Childhood Service supports families with children with hearing loss and/or vision impairment from birth to 4 years. Family-centred programs, including parent education, are run on-site at Padbury Statewide Services Centre and Southwell Primary School. Individual programs occur either on-site or in the home.
SSEN: S Visiting Teacher Services support schools which have students Kindergarten to Year 12/13, with hearing loss and/or vision impairment. Visiting teachers assist classroom teachers and school communities to develop teaching and learning adjustments for students. In addition, the visiting teacher works with the student on a tailored teaching and learning program to support development of specific skills related to the relevant expanded core curriculum.
SSEN: S employs teachers with specialist skills and other specialist staff such as educational audiologists, school psychologists, braille transcribers, captioning officers, Deaf education officers and educational interpreters.
The Associate Principal supports the SSEN: S leadership team to achieve service delivery goals by ensuring that legislative, policy, procedural and practice standards are met and that staff are supported, developed and monitored in their role. They provide educational leadership for the school in collaboration with the Principal and other members of the leadership team, by encouraging staff to share ownership of the SSEN: S vision, values and goals.
The successful applicant will also utilise effective change strategies and assist school communities to accept and develop opportunities for improved services.
It is highly desirable that applicants will have extensive experience supporting students with special educational needs including sensory impairment. Additionally, applicants with a qualification in special education, with a focus on Deaf/Hard of Hearing or Vision Impairment or working towards a qualification will be highly regarded.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to manage physical and financial resources and to contribute to the delivery of high quality services and initiatives in an educational environment.
- Knowledge of current policy and highly developed skills and experience related to children with special educational needs, evidence-based pedagogy, unified and responsive service, change management, staff development and school improvement initiatives.
- Highly developed organisational, conceptual and analytical skills with capacity to apply complex concepts in support of service improvement and policy and program development.
- Highly developed communication, networking, teamwork and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of people within the education community and a variety of other contexts.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Hold a recognised teaching qualification and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
