The Indian Ocean Territories Schools, Christmas Island District High School is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic School Psychologist to join their team. The position is based on Christmas Island and the successful applicant will be required to travel to provide service to the schools on Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
The successful applicant needs to be able to work well independently and in a team environment. You will possess well developed written and interpersonal communication skills, be flexible, thorough and innovative. In addition, demonstrate sound conceptual and analytical skills to effectively manage programs.
In this role you will provide psychological services and evidence based assessments and interventions in learning and disability, mental health and well-being, positive behaviour and risk and critical incident management. You will have the capacity to bring a psychological perspective to issues presenting at the school and the community contexts. We are seeking applicants that have experience in early assessment and intervention approaches in learning and disability; and working with English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) students.
Christmas Island DHS is located approximately 360km southwest of Java and 2300km northwest of Perth, Western Australia. The island is believed to be the remnant of an extinct submarine volcano. Christmas Island's (CI) climate is tropical, with little seasonal variation in temperature. The island experiences a distinct tropical rainfall pattern with a market wet season occurring from approximately January to May with a dry season between August and October.
The Indian Ocean Territories Schools are able to provide an exciting and unique school experience, unlike anywhere else in Australia. By agreement, these Commonwealth schools are administered by the Western Australian Department of Education. Where possible, employment conditions mirror Western Australian mainland schools. School psychologists can be appointed up to a maximum of three years fixed term contract on the islands. Department of Education permanent school psychologists are able to maintain attachment to their substantive school, subject to line management approval.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Ability to implement school psychology services and programs in an educational environment to maximise student learning outcomes;
- Knowledge of the implementation and evaluation of a variety of psychological approaches appropriate for individual, group and system-level intervention;
- High level written and oral communication skills, demonstrating the capacity to produce correspondence, reports and case notes, and interview and training (facilitation) skills;
- Interpersonal skills, which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an interdisciplinary team, working with a range of clients across the lifespan, Departmental personnel and interagency partners across a variety of contexts;
- Ability to apply analytical and conceptual skills to issues identification, risk assessment and analysis, intervention and evaluation.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check; and
- hold an appropriate degree or equivalent qualification which entitles provisional or general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA); and
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching (minimum one year); or
- hold a Graduate Diploma in School Psychology (or equivalent), or
- have undertaken a minimum placement of 40 days in the school education sector as part of higher degree studies in psychology;
or
- hold an appropriate degree or equivalent qualification which entitles general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) and have worked a minimum of three years full-time (or equivalent part-time) as a school psychologist (or equivalent position).

TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
