This is a permanent full-time position commencing in January 2020 in time for the commencement of the school year.
The School Curriculum and Standards Division is seeking to recruit a qualified, highly motivated and committed Principal Consultant, Primary – Curriculum and Assessment (experience in curriculum leadership is highly desirable).
The School Curriculum and Standards Division provides administrative and secretariat services for, and implements the decisions of the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority). The Authority provides quality curriculum, assessment and standards to enable all students being taught the Western Australian Curriculum to become confident, creative learners and active, informed citizens who contribute positively to society.
Located in the Curriculum, Assessment and Strategic Policy Directorate, the Principal Consultant, Primary – Curriculum and Assessment develops and reviews curriculum and assessment support materials, and monitors and reviews the implementation and delivery of curriculum and the standards across Pre-primary to Year 6.
The successful applicants will also:
- implement moderation activities to ensure state-wide comparability of standards for the primary years of schooling;
- organise, facilitate and coordinate information sessions for staff from schools, regions, professional associations and school systems/sector and conduct teacher seminars, as required;
- provide executive support for advisory committees, consultative groups and working parties;
- manage contract writers and associated physical resources in accordance with governance compliance requirements;
- provide advice and briefings to the Minister, the Board, school systems/sector and Executive Director, School Curriculum and Standards, as required; and
- implement moderation activities to ensure state-wide comparability of standards for the primary years of schooling.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment across teams to support the implementation of the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline in primary schools.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our branch for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- High-level knowledge of curriculum and assessment in the context of the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline, the Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines, The Early Years Learning Framework, performance monitoring and review.
- High-order conceptual and analytical skills.
- Substantial project and program management skills, including the ability to implement processes to facilitate monitoring, reporting and successful delivery and objectives in a timely manner.
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including experience in undertaking consultation, stakeholder engagement, collaboration and negotiation.
- Ability to provide strategic leadership.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
