Appointment Pool
Ellen Stirling Primary School (PS) is seeking to establish a pool for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the remainder of the 2019 school year and until the end of Term 4, 2020. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2019 school year, up to the end of Term 4, 2020.
As an Education Assistant - Special Needs you will be required to work in a large team, across a variety of classes and year levels. Under direction of the teaching staff, you will be required to work with all students; 1:1, in small groups or supervising larger groups of students. You may be required to implement school based Direct Instruction programs to small groups of students. At Ellen Stirling PS, the Education Assistants’ roles are frequently changing, to suit the needs of the students, so flexibility and collaboration is of high priority. The applicant must have a good understanding of, and preferably be experienced with working with, a variety of students with different disabilities.
As a suitable applicant you will perform tasks that require confidentiality, discretion and good judgement in achieving clearly defined outcomes determined by the teacher. Through previous experience, you will ideally demonstrate the delivery of planned education programs and how you have contributed in the evaluation process for some students. You will possess good written and oral communication skills which will assist teachers and therapists when planning to meet students’ needs.
Suitable applicants should have a high level of interpersonal skills to enable them to work collaboratively with staff members to meet the needs of students. They will ideally possess the knowledge and experience of working with students with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties and the ability to support student growth, both academically and socially, within the classroom setting. Suitable applicants will ideally have the knowledge of effective strategies to support students, combined with the ability to be highly organised and use initiative.
Ellen Stirling PS is a large Independent North Metropolitan Primary School, catering for approximately 760 students, K-6 and has over 70 staff. Ellen Stirling PS families are from various multi-cultural backgrounds. The workplace is vibrant and filled with passionate people and an evolving culture of continuous review and improvement. The current School Business Plan focuses on the delivery of evidence-based Explicit Direct Instruction teaching pedagogy and programs. The school hosts a high number of Special Needs students with various intellectual and physical disabilities, K-6.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
- Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
- Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
