The Directorate is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and committed Principal Consultant, Student Support to work the work in the Children’s Court and the Student Wellbeing Branch.
This position is a unique opportunity to work closely with the Children’s Court of Western Australia and other government agencies to ensure children and young people have access to an appropriate educational option.
A key aspect of this role is to work in the role of Principal Consultant: Children’s Court to provide advice on policy and procedures to the Children’s Court on matters relating to children and young people enrolled in WA public schools.
The Principal Consultant will work collaboratively with other agencies within the Children’s Court and where appropriate communicate with education regions and Statewide Services to broker services to ensure the young person has access to an appropriate educational option. As such, the position will operate across the Children’s Court and the Department’s Statewide Services Centre in Padbury.
To be successful in this role you will possess excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships and networks within the Department and other agencies for the implementation of evidence-based approaches that support the wellbeing, development and achievement of all students.
In addition, the Principal Consultant will provide practical, accurate and timely advice, resources, information and support to schools and networks regarding student support services, including attendance, behaviour, child protection, social and emotional competencies, mental health, disability and additional learning needs.
The Student Support Services Directorate is responsible for the delivery of integrated, state-wide services for networks, schools and teachers that support the engagement and wellbeing of every student.
You will work with members of other teams on shared priorities and initiatives to deliver integrated services and support to schools. As such, you will be flexible, able to work both collaboratively and independently, and contribute to the work of Statewide Services in a range of areas.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our branch for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Substantial knowledge and understanding of contemporary, evidence-based practices related to student support services.
- Skills and experience in developing and implementing successful student programs, projects or strategies at the school, region, network and/or system level.
- Ability to provide leadership and influence change related to student support services.
- Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to provide innovative solutions to strategic and complex problems and issues.
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to successfully undertake consultations, collaborations and negotiations with senior officers, school leaders and other stakeholders.
- Highly developed written communication and presentation skills, including experience in the preparation of complex reports, briefing notes and professional learning documentation.

Eligibility and Training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
