Spencer Park Education Support Centre (ESC) is seeking to establish a pool of enthusiastic and dedicated Education Assistants – Special Needs, for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during Term 4, 2019 school year and up to the end of Term 4, 2020. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the Term 4, 2019 school year, up to the end of Term 4, 2020.
Suitable applicants will, under teacher direction, assist in the implementation of specialised Individualised Education Programs for students with Autism, Intellectual disabilities, exceptional learning needs and other sensory processing disorders. You will be required to work one on one or with small groups of students in a range of years from Kindergarten to Year 6. You will be required to provide feedback on the student achievement and specific programs. Additional skills such as using digital devices and computers, knowledge and skills in managing challenging behaviour and assisting student with communication are an advantage when working in our school environment.
Spencer Park ESC places a strong focus on ‘success’ for all students in learning, inclusion and their wellbeing. We are situated alongside the Spencer Park Primary School and work closely with them at every opportunity providing inclusivity within the students learning programs. Key focuses include Communication, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), Progress and Achievement. We are an Augmented Alternative Communication (AAC) school with an underpinning belief that all student has the right to be heard. Our PBS expectations include each student learning to “Be Safe, Be Friendly and to Be Your Best.” Additionally it is an expectation that all student demonstrate progress in their learning through their own personal achievement against their individualised learning plans and programs.
Spencer Park ESC is one of five support centres in Western Australia to offer a specialised learning program for children in Kindergarten and Pre-primary with Global Developmental Delay (GDD) and Autism (ASD). Through the Early Intervention Program students work mostly one-on-one in an explicit instruction model designed to prepare children for Year 1 at their local mainstream school.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
- Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
- Ability to assist with the general health and well being of students.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten Students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
