Hedland Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic and aspirational Head of Department (HOD) – Mathematics.
The successful applicant will ideally demonstrate the ability to provide direction and purpose to staff, build team capacity and cohesion and promote an environment of positive quality learning experiences for all students. Becoming a member of the leadership team is an exciting opportunity to help develop a unique and first class learning and teaching hub in the Pilbara.
In addition, the HOD – Mathematics, as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, will work collaboratively with the Principal and other members of the school administration team to provide educational leadership in the school and community by developing and promoting the school motto “Together We Achieve”.
The successful applicant will need to have the necessary skills and ability to provide direction and purpose to young staff, some of whom are working outside of their area of expertise. You will ideally have effective communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team. In this role you will be involved in curriculum development in both lower and senior school, staff development and implementation of Western Australian Curriculum. The ideal candidate will be an individual who has high expectations for all students, ideally be able to demonstrate successful strategies that improve student outcomes and understands the importance of an evidence-based approach to teaching and learning to maximising student outcomes.
We are seeking someone with demonstrated high level of content knowledge of Mathematics. The successful candidate will require outstanding knowledge and application of mathematical concepts required to successfully teach Mathematics at or beyond Year 11 and 12 ATAR standard. A tertiary qualification in Mathematics is highly desirable.
Hedland SHS, located in South Hedland in the Pilbara, is an Independent Public School catering for students from Years 7 to 12. We offer differentiated education programs, which allows students to develop their own skills and talents to achieve success in their chosen pathway. Specialist programs include: LEAP (Learning Extension Academic Program) to support high-achieving students at our school; The Follow the Dream - Partnerships for Success program (in partnership with the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation; V-Swans football and netball academies; the Clontarf Football Academy; Specialist Arts Programs; and VET – industry links initiatives through the trade training centre.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
