Hedland Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to appoint a dynamic and innovative educator with excellent leadership qualities to the role of Deputy Principal.
As Deputy Principal, Year 7/8 sub-school at Hedland SHS you will be highly motivated, energetic and possess exceptional interpersonal and relational skills needed to bring people together. You will be responsible for the strategic direction of the sub-school, able to identify opportunities and establish new initiatives. You will lead a dedicated student services team committed to embedding best-practice pastoral care processes, ensuring students are engaged and successful learners. You will work in partnership with the Principal and the school leadership team to provide instructional educational leadership through developing and promoting the school’s vision, business plan and strategic directions across the whole school community.
Specifically, you will demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills with students, parents and staff, and the ability to develop and maintain positive and effective partnerships with external agencies, industry groups and members of the community. You will provide effective educational leadership within an empowered school culture, with a highly developed knowledge of instructional practices and change management to lead improvement in the quality of teaching and student performance outcomes. You will have a deep understanding of middle schooling, its ethos and cultural expectations, and the key ingredients that deliver excellent learning. Building strong partnerships with the local primary schools and establishing clear and unambiguous communication with parents are fundamental requirements for this position.
Hedland SHS, located in South Hedland in the Pilbara, is an Independent Public School catering for students from Years 7 to 12. We offer differentiated education programs, which allows students to develop their own skills and talents to achieve success in their chosen pathway. Specialist programs include: LEAP (Learning Extension Academic Program) to support high-achieving students at our school; The Follow the Dream - Partnerships for Success program (in partnership with the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation; V-Swans football and netball academies; the Clontarf Football Academy; Specialist Arts Programs; and VET – industry links initiatives through the trade training centre.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
