The School of Special Education Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN:BE) is seeking a committed and effective leader to take up the role of Program Coordinator at our Wheatbelt Engagement Centre in Northam.
The Program Coordinator, in collaboration with the Principal and members of the administrative team, provides educational leadership in the school and the community by developing and promoting the school vision, and encouraging school staff, volunteers from the community and others to share ownership of the school’s vision and goals.
The successful applicant will, using the operational plan and effective change strategies, across a Kindergarten to Year 12 environment, lead the school community to accept and develop opportunities for improved service in the area of responsibility. As the successful applicant you will be required to facilitate workforce effectiveness and provide a role model for self-development to improve professional performance, working autonomously as site manager for the Engagement Centre. You will contribute to the development of the school plan through participative decision making, including assisting in developing policy and establishing and maintaining systems. As the successful Program Coordinator you will establish and manage administrative and operational systems in the relevant area of responsibility to ensure the effective operation of the school within departmental policy and guidelines and liaise extensively with the Principal, Deputy Principals, Heads of Department/Learning Area and relevant specialist staff.
Strengths in Behaviour Management and knowledge of current behaviour support principles and practice, consistent with the Department of Education Managing Student Behaviour are desirable for this position.
The SSEN:BE provides educational support and services to schools for students with extreme, complex and challenging behaviours across a Kindergarten to Year 12 (K-12) context. A continuum of consultative support with schools for students is delivered through 13 engagement centres and the Midland Learning Academy. The services of the engagement centres and the Academy are coordinated through SSEN:BE which provides the administrative structure that oversees and manages these services as a State-wide model of support for schools, teachers and students. The services complement other teams working in networks, regions and schools, supporting a greater number of students across the state.
Engagement Centres coordinate the K-12 provision of the following three services:
- Professional learning to improve student engagement and behaviour.
- Consultative support for schools needing additional assistance with planning for those students with very complex needs.
- Intensive support for individual students exhibiting the most extreme, challenging and complex needs.
The successful applicant will be situated at the Wheatbelt Engagement Centre in Northam. You will be required to do some travel as part of your coordination role within the Wheatbelt district of schools. You may also be required to attend associated training in Perth, which may include an overnight stay.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
