Laverton School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Deputy Principal to join their school teaching and leadership team.
The successful applicant will work with the Principal in providing educational leadership with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy development. The role also requires supporting the Principal in the development and implementation of updating the school business plan, literacy and numeracy operational plans and the school strategic plan. The successful applicant should have an effective skill set in the area of data analysis, and use this data to work with Literacy and Numeracy co-ordinators to refine and elicit whole school improvements in these areas.
The Deputy Principal will work to lead, innovate, manage and monitor the school improvement process, so as to develop a culture of effective teaching and learning for improved performance and care. They will work in collaboration with key stakeholders to develop and maintain a learning environment that is safe, inclusive, intellectually rigorous and addresses the key learning needs of all students. In this role the successful applicant will support staff to create and maintain an empowering culture where professional growth will flourish. They will facilitate workforce effectiveness in leading and motivating staff in planning, with the intention of improving outcomes for students. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary to be successful in this role.
It is desirable for the successful applicant to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the explicit instruction teaching model, and be dedicated and committed to improving student learning through continual teacher improvement and accountability. Leaders, and aspirant leaders, who have experience in implementing PRIME Maths, Mental Maths, Jolly Phonics, Jolly Grammar, Talk4Writing and Big Picture Education structures are encouraged to apply.
Laverton School is a Remote Teaching Service School and is located in the mining community of Laverton, approximately 960 kilometres north east of Perth and 345 kilometres north east of Kalgoorlie. The present population of the town is approximately 350, of which a significant proportion of whom are transient - moving between Kalgoorlie, Mt Margaret, Leonora, Laverton and communities in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands. Employment is mainly in mining, local business, government agencies and to a lesser degree in the pastoral industry. Laverton is on the edge of the Central Desert region and the beginning of the Great Central Road where the bitumen stops and the gravel starts; featuring hot summers, cool winters and a very low rainfall average of about 233 mm per year.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacanc
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
