Are you a passionate and talented primary teacher who has demonstrated a high standard of teaching ability and a strong commitment for improving the educational outcomes of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Alkimos Primary School is seeking to establish a pool of teachers of permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time teachers for positions in our Specialist Learning Program - Autism Spectrum Disorder (SLP-ASD); supporting students to access mainstream education. These teachers will adopt evidence-based practice and pedagogy to meet the needs of students with Autism without a diagnosed intellectual disability. Knowledge of, and ability to, apply Western Australian curriculum is essential. These teachers will be part of the school staff and may, over time, move between the specific role within the Specialist Learning Program for students with Autism and mainstream class roles. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements from Term 4 2019, and within the 2020 school year.
Alkimos PS opened in 2016 and currently has an enrolment of around 580 students, Years Kindergarten to Year 6. Mainstream enrolment will continue to grow steadily. Our approaches to teaching and learning are that our staff understand that the quality of your relationships with students is the key. Our teachers are able to adeptly engage families and the Alkimos school community, as crucial to our school's success is the extent to which this sense of belonging and connectedness can be created. Our staff strive to create a highly collaborative learning environment.
Working with the Program Coordinator (ASD), teachers in the SLP-ASD will provide innovative and engaging classes for our students and contribute to their sense of belonging and overall wellbeing in mainstream public schools. Teachers in this program will demonstrate highly personalised learning plans to facilitate access to an age-appropriate curriculum. They will apply evidence-based, individualised education interventions to improve academic engagement, organisational skills, social thinking, peer relationships and self-regulation skills.
In addition to this, teachers at Alkimos Primary School showcase their prowess in using First Steps, Talk4Writing, cooperative learning strategies and associated principles of these. Use of ICT will also be a strength. Teachers and all staff will be an advocate for the importance of play in learning, taking advantage of the excellent nature playgrounds in our Early Childhood Education and primary areas. A commitment to implementing whole-school curriculum policies and programs will also be evident.
In implementing and upholding these ideals at Alkimos PS, our staff reflect an awareness of the types of services and support required by the students, families and the community of Alkimos and this northern coastal area in general. Underpinning our approaches is a clear recognition that students' learning outcomes and opportunities are maximised when robust non-academic strategies and beliefs are apparent.
