Balga Senior High School Context
Balga SHS is a unique school, specialising in literacy, numeracy, vocational training, and lifelong learning for students including those seeking academic opportunities and those at educational risk. Situated 20 kilometres from Perth, with 614 students from over 39 nationalities, it has experienced, trained staff emphasising Pastoral Care.
Balga SHS an Independent Public School, is recognised for its STEM and Aboriginal Innovation and is identified as a Distinctive School. Balga SHS has been a finalist in WA Premier’s Excellence in Aboriginal Education Awards three times and the school enrols students in a diverse range of specialist programs. These programs have been established specifically to cater for students who, because of their life circumstances, are at considerable educational risk. With a strong focus on the well-being of each student, the school specialises in intensive teaching for literacy and numeracy; is culturally diverse and aware of students’ cultural needs; offers a supportive learning environment; and assists students with personal development.
In order to support student development and needs the school has the following programs in place:
Students in the Intensive English Centre (IEC) are mainly Humanitarian Entrance (refugees or asylum seekers). Many have had little to no prior schooling – entering education for the first time as teenagers.
Lower School Years 7-10 is divided into Junior School Years 7 and 8 and Middle School Years 9 and 10 and caters for a combination of local area students; Intensive English Centre graduates and students engaged in the Wadjak Northside Education Program (WNEP). WNEP seeks to enrich the educational experiences and outcomes of Aboriginal students in the North Metropolitan Region including learning Aboriginal culture, history, language and sport. The Lower School program has diverse educational offerings ranging from Western Australian Curriculum classes through to specialised multi-aged grouped classes for students with significant learning needs, taught by one teacher for most of each school day.
The Senior School program caters for students in Years 11and 12 and links strongly to transition from Year 10; Learning Support or the IEC. Students are able to engage in a range of learning pathways (ATAR, General, Foundation and VET) leading to WACE achievement. Other Senior School flexibilities include the ability to complete senior schooling over three years, part time attendance for some students (such as young parents) and a direct entry University Preparation Course offered in partnership with Edith Cowan University.
Working across the school, the Learning Support Program caters for identified students across all year levels. Students have Individual Education Plans encompassing educational, social and behavioural objectives.
Communication and collaboration across the programs are essential to the smooth running of the School. Across all programs, students may access specialised services such as the Teen Family Centre which caters for school-age parents who have access to our onsite Child Care Centre. This centre provides not only care for their babies but also professional and educational support for the mothers through a SCSA endorsed Young Parent Program. Other specialisations include AFL Football, Netball, Badminton and Soccer programs which enable boys and girls to access specialised coaching and development in these sports, competing in interschool sports, state-wide competitions and regular club fixtures.
Balga SHS is also a member of the New North Education Initiative (NNEI), a collaborative partnership between Dianella Secondary College, Balga, Eastern Hills, Girrawheen and Morley Senior High Schools. Through the partnership, students have access to a wider breadth of senior school curriculum choices with specialist teachers. Students remain attached to their home school campus and attend a host school for selected courses.
