The Abrolhos Islands are a complex of 122 islands, reefs and lagoons located on the edge of the continental shelf 60km off the Geraldton coast. Lying in the path of the warm Leeuwin current, the Abrolhos is a diverse meeting place for tropical and temperate marine life. The islands themselves provide refuge for a unique suite of terrestrial fauna and flora, including one of Australia’s most threatened birds.
This position presents a unique opportunity to work in one of the most pristine and diverse environments in Western Australia, and to help shape and manage the newly created Houtman Abrolhos Islands National Park to deliver a sustainable, world class visitor experience.
Similar appointments may be made from this process in locations throughout Western Australia within a 12-month period to positions that may be permanent or contract, including contract appointments with the possibility of subsequent permanency.

Job Description
Under the limited direction of the Operations Manager Geraldton:
- Responsible for coordinating conservation and parks and visitor services activities in the Houtman Abrolhos Islands National Park.
Selection Criteria
Applicants should address the following four (4) criteria. These should be addressed in no more than four (4) pages in total.
- Demonstrated high level understanding of and experience in conservation estate management, including developing and coordinating work plans and strategies, education, enforcement, research and monitoring and familiarity with the principles of national park management, with a preference for someone with knowledge of marine, coastal and island ecology and management.
- Demonstrated experience of high level leadership and management of staff, researchers, contractors and volunteers; including the ability to conduct employee development and performance management reviews.
- Evidence of highly developed oral communication and interpersonal skills and experience in effective liaison and negotiation at a senior level with external organisations, stakeholders and the media, and handling complex and detailed interactions to achieve organisational objectives.
- Demonstrated experience in, and knowledge of administrative and financial management, including project management, budget preparation and expenditure control within financial constraints.
Note: In accordance with the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004, the successful applicant will be required to possess or obtain a current Working With Children Check card prior to commencement.
