Swan View Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Principal to join their team.

The successful applicant will maintain a school culture that promotes positive relationships between students and between students and staff. They will engage parents and the wider community in the educational work of the school as well as be innovative and creative in the establishment of systems and structures to foster academic development and improvements in social and emotional development for students.

Swan View Senior High School was founded in 1977 and became an Independent Public School in 2015.  In 2018 there are 578 students enrolled with 108 Aboriginal students.

The school has implemented a range of programs which cater for the specific needs of the student population. Approximately 82% of students are from families in the lower 50% of socio-educational disadvantage.  These programs include State endorsed Specialist Drama program (FAME) Achieving Academic Excellence (ACE), specialist Basketball, media art design (MAD) and Gateway to Engineering which affords students the opportunity to access a learning program suitable to their needs and ability.  In 2017, a graduation (WACE) rate of 97.4% placed the school in the Top 50 schools in WA, the ATAR rose ten points and Year 12 students in VET had a 100% VET completion rate.  Although small in number, students’ success in the ATAR pathway is a school priority.   In addition, an education support program commenced in 2018 with purposefully refurbished teaching and learning areas to cater for students with special needs.

A partnership with the Clontarf Academy caters for Aboriginal boys.  Clontarf staff are an important component of the Aboriginal Learning and Engagement Team in the school which also incorporates the Follow the Dream program and Kwobidak Yoka Flourish program for girls.  Swan View Senior High School has solid and productive partnerships with Curtin University, UWA, and ECU.

The Principal is responsible for engaging a diverse school community in the educational programs of the school and fostering a commitment to continuous school improvement and development of the instructional program, particularly, the pedagogy of all teachers.

The Principal supports the Department’s objectives for the public education and training of students in Western Australia. The role of the Principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department of Education and the school community.                                    

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

We seek an individual whose attributes encompass:

  • optimising the school’s financial, physical and human resources through sound management practices and organisational systems and processes that contribute to the implementation of the school’s vision and goals;
  • fostering a safe, purposeful and inclusive learning environment and the capacity to develop constructive and respectful relationships with staff, students, parents and other stakeholders;
  • leading, managing and monitoring the school improvement process through a current and critical understanding of the learning process and its implications for enhancing high quality teaching and learning in every classroom in the school;
  • modelling important values and behaviours to the school and community, including a commitment to creating and sustaining effective professional learning communities within the school, and across all levels of the system;
  • understanding and leading the school community in promoting a vision for the future, underpinned by common purposes and values that will secure the commitment and alignment of stakeholders to realise the potential of all students;
  • leading and managing the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community, through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and other stakeholders; and
  • ensuring compliance and accountability for the overall management and development of the school within Government and Departmental policies and guidelines.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the three leadership requirements and five professional practices particular to the role of a principal identified by the Australian Professional Standard for Principals:

  1. Effective leadership in teaching and learning
  2. Developing self and others
  3. Leading improvement, innovation and change
  4. Leading the management of the school
  5. Engaging and working with the community

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.

TRAINING

Employees will be required to:

  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
