This is a 15 month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 4, 2026 with possible extension (12 months) and/or permanency

Derby District High School (DHS) is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Derby is 220 km east of Broome by road and is 2 463 km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!

Derby DHS is located in attractive and well-maintained grounds and surroundings. With an enrolment of over 600 students, it provides an education program for students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park. Students in Years 11 and 12 have access to a range of programs leading to secondary graduation. Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs are offered in the school and in partnership with the local TAFE campus. The school has a very successful trade entry program and students are keen to trial employment and supported to connect with local trades. Subjects leading to university entrance are either delivered by school staff through a Uni-Prep course or through the School of Isolated and Distance Education.

The Role

The Student Services Case Manager provides individualised case management and coordinates support for students experiencing social, emotional, wellbeing, attendance or other barriers to engagement and learning. The role would suit someone who enjoys working collaboratively with students, families, school staff and external agencies to understand individual needs, identify appropriate supports and develop positive pathways for engagement and wellbeing. The role may also involve supporting children in the care of the Department of Communities and responding to complex or sensitive student wellbeing matters.

The successful applicant should be able to coordinate case conferences and multi-agency meetings, contribute to risk assessment and management processes, and support the implementation and monitoring of individualised strategies. Ideally, they would have an ability to build positive relationships with students, families and service providers, facilitate referrals to appropriate support services, and contribute to wellbeing and engagement programs across the school.

This position would suit a person with strong communication and interpersonal skills and an understanding of young people, family and community systems, mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. An understanding of local youth and community services and referral pathways would be highly desirable, along with sound organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills. A compassionate, person-centred approach and the ability to work sensitively and collaboratively with students and their families would be valued.

  3. Demonstrated well developed knowledge of young people, their family and community systems, mental health, psychosocial challenges, and wellbeing.
  4. Demonstrate a person-centred approach and an understanding of youth agencies and service supports and referral pathways for students.
  5. Demonstrated well developed research, conceptual and analytical skills, and experience in identifying problems and developing/delivering appropriate intervention strategies and support programs.
  6. Demonstrated sound knowledge and experience of/in the youth and community sector, particularly local organisations, and services to best support young people, additionally, knowledge of professional practice and code of ethical framework standards.
