About the role
We are seeking candidates at all stages of their careers — whether you are looking to begin your journey in signalling or bring established experience and technical capability to the role. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your skills in a supportive, hands-on environment, progressing from supervised learning through to working more independently and contributing as a valued member of a high-performing team.
Depending on your skills, experience, and exposure to signalling or related industries, you will be aligned to an appropriate Job Description Form (JDF), offering clear pathways for progression across multiple levels. In this role, you will be involved in a diverse range of activities including preventative and corrective maintenance, assisting with installation and positioning of signalling structures, and undertaking running repairs and fault finding on signalling equipment, machinery, and infrastructure.
You will have the opportunity to build or apply your technical knowledge by interpreting signalling schematics, completing measurements and calculations, and identifying faults or hazards to support safe and efficient operations. The role provides exposure to a variety of tools, plant, and equipment, with opportunities to operate vehicles and machinery where licensed. Work will include both practical hands-on tasks — such as trenching and cable installation — and operating in dynamic environments including live rail corridors, confined spaces, at heights, and across varied terrain.
Safety is at the centre of everything we do, and you will be supported to develop and apply safe working practices at all times while maintaining high standards across worksites, tools, and equipment. You will also gain experience in maintaining records, completing job documentation, and using relevant systems. With ongoing training, mentoring, and development opportunities, this role offers strong potential for career growth, including stepping into more advanced technical responsibilities or supporting and guiding others as your experience develops.
About You!
To excel in this role, you should possess:
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and experience (or strong interest) in signal maintenance, including the ability to use tools, equipment, and perform basic fault finding, repairs, and manual tasks in a rail or similar industrial environment.
- Sound literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to complete measurements, interpret technical drawings/schematics, maintain accurate records, and use computer systems effectively.
- A strong commitment to safety, with knowledge of or the ability to learn and apply rail safety standards, operational procedures, and safe working practices in high-risk environments such as live rail corridors, confined spaces, and working at heights.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills, along with a proactive attitude, reliability, and willingness to undertake ongoing training and development, with the capacity to grow into more independent or supervisory responsibilities.
