About the role:

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Home Care Tradesperson to join our Occupational Therapy (OT) team at Perth Children’s Hospital. You will be part of a dedicated team, contributing to patient care and improving the lives of children and their families.

In this autonomous role you will work closely with our Occupational Therapists (OTs) to ensure children are discharged with the equipment and home modifications they need to safely return home. You will support children with genetic or acquired disabilities, developmental conditions, and injuries such as fractures by designing and delivering practical, customised solutions that enhance their independence, safety, and quality of life.

In this varied and rewarding role, no two days are the same. You will work closely with the OT team to problem-solve, design, fabricate, and install custom solutions, including the modification and maintenance of specialised equipment including wheelchairs, strollers, leg boards, and other aids, to support patient therapeutic needs. The OT team will refer cases to you and provide clinical specifications to guide your work, such as the angle required for a wheelchair’s backrest or foot placement, or the design for a ramp or leg board.

Your ability to problem-solve, tailor individual pieces of equipment, work with diverse materials, and collaborate with multidisciplinary trades within the workshop will be key to creating effective solutions for each child.

You will work independently within the hospital, utilising the workshop at North Metro Health (Graylands) and travelling between the workshop, homes and Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) as required. 

Key responsibilities include:

• Designing and fabricating custom aids, equipment, and modifications for children with disabilities and orthopaedic a conditions.
• Building ramps, leg boards, wheelchair adaptations, and other equipment tailored to each child's needs, ensuring compliance with building standards.
• Conducting home assessments with OTs, providing technical advice and creating solutions for safe patient discharge.
• Collaborating with other trades such as electricians, arranging quotes and coordinating modifications as needed.
• Maintaining the safety and tidiness of the workshop, ensuring adherence to safety guidelines and building codes.
• Managing stock of materials (wood, foam, carpentry components), ensuring adequate supply for ongoing and future projects.
• Working onsite at PCH in Clinic L to adjust and customise equipment for individual children.

If you have sound experience in carpentry or another relevant trade, equipment design, and construction, particularly in health or disability settings we would love to hear from you! In addition, the ideal candidate will possess:

• The ability to prepare technical drawings and specifications with minimal guidance.
• Familiarity with Australian Standards, National Building Code, and health and safety practices.
• Excellent time management skills to prioritise and coordinate workload efficiently.
• Prior experience with wheelchair and specialised stroller modifications is highly desirable.

About our Occupational Therapy Team

Based at Perth Children's Hospital, our team provides occupational therapy services to children and young people aged 0 to 16 years across Western Australia. We work with both hospital inpatients and children attending outpatient and specialist clinics.

We assess each child's needs and work closely with them and their family to build independence in everyday activities. This may include supporting skills related to movement, thinking and learning, sensory processing, emotional wellbeing, social interaction, and daily self-care.

We provide support across a range of areas, including rehabilitation following injury or surgery, neurodevelopmental conditions, and transition planning. We help children return home, participate at school, and engage in community life.

Our services include outpatient follow-up appointments, Telehealth support for regional patients, transition to adult services, and collaboration with hospitals, community services, schools, and other healthcare providers.
