This is an Executive Leader (OME – Other Management Executive) role with an attractive remuneration package for an up to 36 Month Fixed-Term appointment (30 June 2029).

Western Australia is a great place to live and deliver elections. And it’s getting better as we transform the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC) into a contemporary leader in electoral service through modernising systems, strengthening capability, and lifting the experience for voters and stakeholders.

Elections might look straightforward from the outside, but behind every polling place, ballot count and result is a team that’s calm, switched-on and committed to getting it right. From State, Local Government and a wide range of community and private elections, we’re always planning, delivering and improving.

Our WAEC values underpin everything we do, guiding our decisions and ensuring that we are one cohesive team pulling in the same direction. Join us for a rewarding executive leadership position offering a career opportunity with purpose, because in the end it’s not just about running an election. It’s about playing your part in something bigger, helping shape the future of WA.

The Opportunity:

As a key member of the Commission’s executive leadership team, the Executive Director Strategy and Engagement provides enterprise-level leadership for the Commission’s strategic direction, organisational reform and whole-of-Commission alignment.

Working closely with the Electoral Commissioner and executive leadership team, the Executive Director leads the Commission’s  reform agenda, ensuring priorities are translated into coordinated action and measurable organisational outcomes. The role provides authoritative advice on strategic priorities, organisational performance and emerging risks, while overseeing enterprise planning, governance, risk, assurance and performance frameworks.

A key priority of the role is leading the coordinated implementation of all actions arising from the Special Inquiry, establishing strong governance, assurance and reporting arrangements to support structured, accountable and timely delivery across the Commission.

The Executive Director also provides leadership across corporate communications, stakeholder and community engagement, and customer experience. This includes ensuring clear and consistent communication, strengthening community trust and participation, and overseeing customer-focused service improvement and complaints management.

This highly influential role is central to building organisational resilience and capability, driving modernisation and continuous improvement, and ensuring the Commission remains aligned, accountable and responsive to the evolving needs of the Western Australian community.

About You:

You are a highly accomplished executive leader with a demonstrated track record in shaping organisational strategy and leading complex reform programs in high-risk, high-accountability public sector environments.

You bring extensive experience in governance, risk and assurance, with the judgement and foresight to navigate ambiguity, complexity and sensitive, high-profile matters. You understand how to translate strategic intent into coordinated organisational action and sustainable outcomes, while maintaining strong accountability and public confidence.

You have experience leading multi-disciplinary portfolios spanning strategy, reform, communications, engagement and organisational performance. With exceptional communication, negotiation and influencing skills, you are credible and confident engaging with senior executives, ministers, government agencies and a broad range of stakeholders.

You are a values-based leader who builds culture, capability and performance across teams, while driving organisational improvement, modernisation and new ways of working. You bring resilience, sound judgement and a strong commitment to integrity, accountability and public service.

Knowledge of electoral administration, public sector governance or regulatory environments would be highly regarded.

Specific details of the role can be found in the Position Description attached to this advert.
